Can I still major in Dance?

I'm still not entirely sure about this, I'm pretty much either way on being an Art major or a Dance major.

I'm asking this because I had to take 1 year and a half off of dance because of the cost. (90 bucks a month for 2 one hour classes. I'm not poor, per se, but my family has to take care of medical fees and such, and the bills pile up easy. I didn't want them paying more.)

Anyways. I've been dancing ballet since I was 8 and reached a pretty intermediate/advanced level before I stopped. And I've been dancing jazz since I was 9 and was intermediate before I stopped. I took ballet again for a couple of months before I had to stop again because of accelerated summer school. (it took me a grade level above my friends in math! thumbs up) Anywho, I now take the school's dance program because it's free. (it's mostly jazz with hip hop, but we did spend a couple days on ballet)

As it turns out, I'm still a strong dancer. And I'm planning on enrolling in dance classes next school year. (it's cheaper, but the educations great!) I'll have 3 years to dance some more before college, so I wonder if there's any way to major in college.

Hi. It sounds like to me you are a recreational dancer. If you want to major in dance you will have to significantly increase your classes. Most kids that are auditioning at the good schools are dancing 25-30hrs per week. Very heavy in ballet with others mixed in. Now you can find programs that you dont have to audition for but they are usually not top tier schools. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Yes, you can. There are many different kinds of schools for many different types of dancers. You will not get into Purchase or any conservatory, but you probably wouldn’t want to go there anyway given your other interests. Find a school you love that has a good dance program. You will discover that some of the people in your classes have never taken a dance class before in their lives. And some of them will go on to major in dance, and have successful dance-related careers.
