Ok...I was accepted RD at the Engineering School with a 94 and a 1460. THats not my problem.

However, I'm a Jew from NY, recieving financial aid...my favorite band is Pink Floyd (of course the Allmans are good too) and I also love the Grateful Dead. Better yet, I'm for legalization of marijuana and other of such liberal values. Still worse, I'm too accepting for a frat and dont like alcohol all that much (im a social drinker) still more terrible, my hair...ITS LONG...and im a guy...

Will one of my southern classmates roll up a National Review and beat me with it to within inches of my life?

Will I hafta blend in the the crowd and pretend that I love Lynyrd Synyrd

Will the girls attempt to cut my hair in my sleep and steal everything in my draw accept for J Crew for ruining the reputation of the college?

Or will I survive as a token liberal, have a good time, and play all of Dark Side of the Moon loudly in my room (maybe when no ones listening?)

You will be fine, trust me. I live in Knoxville, TN, I am a liberal, I play in a jam band called HearSay ( www.hearsaymusic.net ) and I am going to attend Vanderbilt in the fall as a freshman. My girlfriend lives in Nashville,so I visit it every weekend. Don't ask how much that is in gas annually..I have calculated it and its not pretty. I know Nashville like the back of my hand..and here's a fact most of the northern Vanderbilt matriculants don't know: DAVIDSON COUNTY (Nashville) VOTED OVERWHELMINGLY FOR KERRY!
P.S. Check out our website...with your taste in music maybe we should room together.
P.P.S. I am the drummer of the band.

Pink Floyd is awesome. I love them -- Im listening to Animals right now. Allman Brothers are chill too, hopefully you saw them at the Beacon this year in NY.

Are any of you guys going to Bonnaroo this year? And for all you New Yorkers there is always Summer Camp? Mid-westerners: Moe.down 2005?
Any attendees out there?

Sorry I just confused the locations of Moe.down '05 and Summer Camp '05. I put the thing down; switch it and reverse it. I will be at all those festivals...probably wearing a Vandy t-shirt...maybe not.

No, none of that will happen. You will find plenty of friends who are exactly like you. But, do try and at least get to know some of preppy, J.Crew-wearin', National Review-totin', hair-cuttin', Bible-thumpin' conservative (ewww...) here. You'll certainly expand your horizons

u see...its people like LuPar that im worried about...he probably listens to like (c)rap or something, loves national review magazine and has a closed mind to all that is good in society...

how many rolled up copies of nation magazine will i need to fend people like him off?!?!?!

I dont know about you, but most of my friends are into that type (zep, floyd, etc) of music, and we're 17/18.... I can't think of one who listens to the crap much of modern music is.

Don't get me wrong Led...just surprised. They were my favorite bands when I was in college. Graduated in '74. I remember going to see a band at school that I had never heard of before, they had two drummers and a slide guitar player that was unbelievable. It was right before the Allmans went huge. Always did think our generation had the best music. Glad you agree...

LuPar......you are very wrong. Most college kids listen to classic rock. I listen to all the same bands and music like Phish/Allman Brothers/Floyd.... and they are very popular here along with 90s Alternative Bands.

LedZep, not only do you not have to worry about your music tastes its so good that u should be respected for it.

Zep,
Accept for legalizing the green stuff, I''m with you. I am also a 40++ something with a son who is a Junior and is seriously looking at Vandy. Being 17 he has revolted from my love of the Grateful Dead (I've seen them about 30 times), but he is into Hendrix, Beatles, Doors and also some of the newer stuff. He is not very political though.
From what we have seen visiting a number of schools already, all of the major schools with over 5000 students have a diverse culture of kids, and you and he could find numerous groups to fit in with. The only schools that have differed are very small or are off the beaten path schools. For example Cooper Union in New York City is so small and so scholastic that there isn't much of a culture within the school other than studying, but tremendous culture within its surroundings in East Greenwich Village. An opposite example is Indiana State a larger university, in the middle of nowhere, with a very conservative non-diverse culture.
