What state are you in?
Some states have grant programs for low income students in addition to federal grants and loans. But that aid would also be paid to the school. So not available upfront.

Looks like the tuition for full year is $7086 and on campus room & board $7664 = $14750
If you qualify for all the aforementioned estimated aid (not including plus loan) that would add up to $15275
Not sure if you will qualify for work study though if you are just now submitting FAFSA to them and being spring admit.
Also not sure what is needed to qualify for TPEG grant.
Work study money is paid as a paycheck during the semester so not available up front. You would need book money, possibly health insurance, personal expenses, how would you pay for all that?
But I would contact them and see if the housing deposit can be deferred or waived for 0 EFC student. Also you might inquire if you would be better off to start in the fall.
So let’s blook at direct billed costs (tuition, r&b) $14750
Minus possible aid (including TPEG but not work study) $12275
Leaves a balance of $2475
That does not include books or insurance or transportation to school, how would you pay that?
I’m hoping that I could be able to get a job to help pay the remaining balance the financial aid doesn’t cover. Also I do freelance makeup as kind of a side job and have been doing so for a while-so I could do that to pay for education related things. And the school is about 2 hours from where I live and I’m taking the travel bus to get me there which is $28+$15 for luggage. I already have that saved and can afford to pay that traveling to and from school for holidays. I’m going to try and see if I qualify for TPEG. I’ve spoken with the school and all they’ve mentioned is that it is due the 13th of January 2016 instead of the 5 day within submission of the housing application-which it was before. And that if not paid on the 13th there would be a $25 late fee.
I’ve researched the TPEG eligibility requirements and this is what I found on their website
Students must be meeting eligibility requirements below:
Have financial need,
Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate,
Register with the Selective Services, If required,
Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen,
Have a valid Social Security Number,
Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program,
Meet the standards of the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (FA SAP),
Be registered and attending at least 6 credit hours in a Fall and/or Spring semester and/or 3 credit hours in Summer Session I, II or III.
This grant is available for:
For residents, nonresidents or foreign students,
For undergraduates or graduates.
For students attending public colleges in Texas.
The thing is that the housing deposit and first semester bill will be due before you can earn it if you start in the spring.
The school will expect you to pay the housing deposit and also the first semester bill. That’s 1/2 of $14750 so $7325 plus the deposit of $200.
All you can really count on is Pell grant of $5775, so 1/2 is $2887 and loan of $5500 1/2 of that $2750 =$5637
So that would leave you about $2000 short, you need books too and you said you saved money for bus fare.
If you started in the fall instead and would submit FAFSA asap in January (and update it after taxes are filed) you might then possibly get the TPEP grant and work study and have the next few months and the summer to save up money.
Ok, I think I’d be better off doing that. I guess i’ll just wait for the fall. Thank you so much for your help and your time as well!
[bAward Amounts
The Office of Student Financial Services will award a student up to $500 dollars per semester. There is no guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive a TPEG; students at STC are awarded based on the availability of funds. TPEG funds are awarded by semester.
Eligibility Requirements
There is no additional application to apply for this grant besides the FAFSA. Students must be meeting eligibility requirements/**
It says it is based on availability of funds. So if they already gave them out then you might not get it.
You need to make sure the FA office of UHV gets your FAFSA and then see if you would have enough aid to cover everything. Or if waiting for fall would be better. Without work study and extra state grant and not enough time to earn the money I don’t think it would work out.
Sorry was trying to quote and messed it all up. And tablet won’t let me edit
Someone suggested in the earlier comments that Spring 2016-2017 aid is based on your 2015-2016 FAFSA and that i needed to add the school code onto my application and submit it. I did that earlier today-logged into my fafsa, added the school, submitted it, etc. What was the purpose of that exactly? And also I plan on filling out the FAFSA application for the 2016-2017 literally the same day it is available-which is January first of next year- because classes start the 19th that month and I’m already enrolled for spring term.
I,suggested submitting to yoir new school. The purpose would be to see if you could, get any aid for the semester starting January 2016…including the direct Loan. You would have to,get this from the college in which you are enrolled…and that is the new one.
If you had filed the FAFSA for 2015/16 and started school at a different college last fall, but then withdrew, then the new school would not be able to award you federal or state aid unless you add their code and submit FAFSA
But they might not be able to get a financial aid package ready for you by January when classes start. They don’t know you have a 0 EFC until they get the info from the FAFSA. So you should get in touch with them once they receive the FAFSA and talk to them. They should be able to tell you if they still have state grant or work study funds available for spring. But like I said bills have to be paid upfront for the semester and work study money is not available until you work and earn it during the semester.
If you are already enrolled for spring and it’s not affordable then you might have to defer till fall, withdraw from classes, so you are not charged for this spring semester.
Then you need to file the 2016/17 FAFSA in January. If tax returns are not done yet you can estimate income based on paystubs and then update later once taxes are filed.
The start in fall would give you time to work and earn money that you need. And possibility to qualify for more aid.
You said you dropped out of the other school because you couldn’t pay the bill. You can’t start at this school unless you know you have costs covered.
So basically financial aid would not kick in in time for classes to start on the 19th and I would have to pay upfront and out of pocket?
Yes.
Even if it did the only thing guaranteed would be half of yearly Pell and half of federal loans.
Since federal work study and the TPEP are dependent on availability they might have run out of those.
I think it said somewhere in the UHV links that deadline for fall aid was February and for spring October.
You would need $1738 plus $200 deposit for spring semester. If 1/2 tuition and fees is $7375 and 1/2 of loan and Pell is $5637.
Ok I guess I will see if I can defer my admission for the fall or just not do college at all because even with a job I’m never gonna be able to shell out almost $2000 a month for tuition payments. And i thought UHV was one of the more affordable colleges.
I’m not sure what you mean. It would not be $2000 a month. If you qualify for federal and state aid most of your costs would be covered.
You have to have a plan and the plan has to be affordable.
What happened with the FAFSA at the other school that caused you not to get aid?
Do you have any schools nearby you could commute to? Or a community college you could start at and then transfer to 4 yr university?
I said the $2000 because you said I’d have to pay upfront and out of pocket for the spring 2016 semester because FAFSA wouldn’t be processed in time.
The reason I didn’t receive aid at the last school was because I made a mistake on my FAFSA saying I was going for my post bachelor’s degree (meaning I graduated and was coming back to school for a second degree). That wasn’t the case so every time I would check my financial aid on my student account,it would say “holds” -meaning that I needed to that corrected by a FAA. I went to their office to get it corrected but they said it’d take 2-4 weeks. That was a big problem because they were already telling me that I owed them $115 for late registration, a $15 business plan set up fee, plus about 25% of the tuition or room and board. I could barely even afford to give them the $115, which I ended up doing, and the deadline to set up a payment plan was the next day-or else all your classes would be dropped. I’m not rich and i definitely didn’t have a job out there so how do they expect me to set a plan with them and pay all that money that i don’t have. Plus, i don’t have a debit or credit card when I’m fresh out of high school. So i had to withdraw and was hoping I could come back when I got my FAFSA corrected (which was corrected a few weeks after me leaving the school).
I’m not sure if i should even be trying to go to college. I’m saying that because my interests and talents are not in half of the things that most colleges near me offer. I’m into makeup, fashion styling, and photography and I want to make that into a career. I’m very passionate about these things and these are where my talents are. Would it be more ideal for me to go to a trade school or like a beauty or fashion school? I’m not even going to consider the Art Institutes-I’ve heard too much negative things about for-profit schools scamming people for money.
