Can your application be affected by the intended major you select on the application? For example, I will be applying to MIT and Caltech this fall, which are obviously math/science focused schools. I want to major in engineering, but I have no math/science ECs. They simply do not exist at my school (small and rural). I do, however, have heavy involvement in other ECs that deal more with non-math/science stuff (MUN, Boy Scouts, Student Council, Varsity athletics, youth group, etc.). If I put my intended major as economics or something, will that increase my admissions chances, considering my ECs? Thanks!

While it helps to have your extracurricular activities match up to your intended major, you could tell the truth about what you want to major in, and explain that your small rural school doesn’t offer the opportunities you would like to pursue your interests.
