Volunteer Experience:
MANY events with the neighborhood organization, including National Night Out, block parties, golf tournaments, city clean-ups, summer arts and crafts program

Essays: probably weren’t that great. Writing apparently isn’t my strongest point, but they were decent enough.

Interviews: I thought I interview with Dartmouth went great. The guy went to my high school and said he was really impressed. I guess the college wasn’t. Cornell went fine, it seemed to help. UPENN felt so awkward, probably gave me no chance.

I only applied to 6 schools…this was most likely a mistake. I should’ve applied to more. I was hoping to get accepted to one Ivy League, but I suppose waitlisted is good enough for me. I think it was my lack of extracurricular activities that held me back, along with my writing. Anyways, I’m happy with Mount Holyoke and can’t wait to receive my education there. =]

To be honest, seeing our score results won’t really make a difference. Scores and extracurricular activities just vary sooo much, that knowing some of these results can actually hurt you. For instance, if you want to attend Harvard and you see someones results you may think that you are over qualified when reality you have the same chance of being rejected. I highly suggest that you upcoming seniors not look at these results and just be confident in yourselves and apply to the schools you want to. Don’t doubt yourself, dream big, and apply to the schools that you really want to go to… Stretch or not.
I know that if I had looked at past results, I would never have been accepted to the school that I was.

SAT: 2330 (730 CR 800 M 800 W)
GPA: 3.89 UW

ECs: President of GSA, Co-chair of City Youth Commission, Amnesty International, co-host/produce a radio show, National Honor Society, Piano/Jazz Band, theater

Awards: AP Scholar, National Merit Commended, First Honors, Holy Cross Book Award

APs (only offered junior/senior year)
11th: US History (5), English Language (5), French Language (4),
12th: English Lit, Microecon, Physics B, Calc AB
Also took two college classes (Congress and the Legislative Process, Social Movements). probably within the top few most rigorous course loads at my high school.

Rejected: Yale
Waitlisted: Brown (stayed on but didn’t get in), Swarthmore, Bowdoin
Accepted: Wesleyan (early write), Vassar, Oberlin, Reed, Bard (EA/Immediate Decision Plan), Brandeis (w/ full tuition Justice Louis D Brandeis Scholarship)

Attending: Wesleyan–It was my 2nd choice after Brown, and I sort of think I might’ve had a chance there if I had applied ED or a year that wasn’t so ridiculously competitive. oh well. I could say all the things that I think I could’ve done better, or I could just say that I’m happy to be going to Wesleyan.

White male
Georgia resident
High school: North Hall High School - Public, average
Intended major: Undecided

GPA: 3.92 (unweighted); 4.38 (weighted)
Class rank: 11 out of 208; Top 6%

  • Math: 36
  • Reading: 36
  • Science: 33
  • Writing: 10
  • Combined English/Writing: 33
    AP: (AP Scholar)
  • U.S. History: 3
  • English Language: 5
  • U.S. Government: 3
    PSAT: 202; National Merit Commended
Extracurriculars: I was passionate about them, but they were nothing to awe-inspiring for an admissions committee I don’t believe
    Schedule: “Most Rigorous,” 9 AP’s
Essays: Original, and well-written, as far as I recall.
    Recommendations: Very nice as well.
Interview: (Duke only) Awesome. Had a very entertaining conversation for several hours.

Rejected: Duke

Accepted:
UGA (applied for Foundation Fellows scholarship, received $1k merit and in honors program)
GA Tech
UNC Chapel Hill (applied for Robertson scholarship, did not receive)
Vanderbilt (applied for Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship, did not receive)
Emory (applied for Emory Scholars, did not receive)

Attending: UGA. I can’t afford anywhere else, but I’m still looking forward to it. The honors program is really nice, and it’ll only cost me $5.5k/yr with Georgia’s HOPE scholarship, the merit money, and the Byrd scholarship that I received. My number one choice was Duke, but that fell through; however, I suppose it’s nice to be going somewhere I don’t have to worry about money. The need-based aid for everywhere didn’t meet what my parents were willing to pay. I am still unbelievably happy with where I am going.

School:
-3.92 unweighted GPA (We don’t do weighted)
-Ranked 1/31 (Valedictorian)
Course Rigor: Above and Beyond. I have taken all high school classes a year or two earlier, then my senior year I took 4 APs, a PSEO (college class online), and a few independent classes. Please note that my school doesn’t actually offer AP classes. I had to take them online. Essentially, I’ve taken harder classes than anyone in the history of my school.

ECs:
Activity / Years / Other
Soccer / 4 / JV captain (11), Varsity captain (12), Volunteer Referee, Recreational Team Captain (10, 11, 12)
Speech / 4 / State (4 times), All-State (2 times)
Student Council / 3 / President (12), Member of 3 committees
Youth Leadership Council / 2 / Traveled to DC twice and New Orleans once to work on leadership skills and help out the Rural Electric Coops.
Volunteer in Political Campaign / 2 / Organized and recruited volunteers, did tons of work
Republican Junior Delegate / 2 / Junior Chairman at District Convention, Junior Delegate at state, district, county conventions ***
Web Administrator / 1 / Redesigned and vastly improved my school’s website

***Also, I included in extra info that a platform plank I wrote made it onto the Republican Party of Iowa’s official platform (13.20)

Recommendations:
Teacher:
–One is literally amazing–very very specific and very very positive.
–One was at least positive, but I don’t know how well written it was, it was likely hastily put together. Could have been very great though; I am not sure.
Guidance Counselor:
–Not too great. Marked that I have “below average” character and “average” extracurriculars (that’s a joke in itself). Said a few things that could have been taken negatively.
Supplemental:
–One from the political candidate I volunteered for about my work ethic and character (great)
–One from principal about how I’m a good student and make good moral choices (good/great)

Essay:
About my childhood adventures, coming to terms with adulthood, and fighting conformity. Not sure how to rate it, but I am sure it was at least good

Possible Confounding Factor:
I was suspended from school at the beginning of my junior year. It was because I messed with the school’s website. I made it clear that I just fiddled with the colors and some banners and that nothing inappropriate was added. I also made it very clear that I realize my mistake and that I have made up for it by regaining my school’s trust. Now, I run the school’s website single-handedly. I also redesigned the site completely. It went from having next to no information available to having almost everything on the site–from handbooks to field trip forms to calendars. It’s also quite visually appealing! I am proud of what I’ve done with it and that was also made clear. Personally, I don’t think this had a huge impact on my app, either way, as I think I made it clear that I made up for it. Note that Georgetown did not see my suspension because they do not do CommonApp. Also, Georgetown had a better recommendation (by principal rather than GC).

*National Forensics League: Degree of Excellence
*Maryland Distinguished Scholars: Semifinalist
*Meritorious Service Award

**Why I think I was accepted to those schools: **
Even though my app is pretty unremarkable (except maybe for the pretty crazy courseload), my recommendations were either excellent or phenomenal. I think I also wrote a decent essay; some colleges remarked on that with a handwritten note on their acceptance letters.
Why I think I was rejected from those schools:
*Stanford=didn’t show any interest. Parent-forced apps are not fun in the least. Also the same with Columbia and Cornell…I wasn’t really interested) *Yale=loved this school, but the deferred pool is pretty hard and there are so many amazing applicants. I’m a well-rounded student, but I probably lacked the really special something these top top top schools are looking for.

Attending: Dartmouth. I love my school
