I had never heard of this either. If anyone had asked me if they could do that (without showing that it actually had been done like you did) I’d have told them there was no way they could do it. Seems like the more I think I know the less I actually do.

One benefit of it would be a higher sub loan limit. My daughter was offered unsub loans for the first time this year (they ran out of SEOG and WS before they got to her). It is her last year and getting more sub loans (she is not at the aggregate) would have been better. I don’t think her school does the BBAY thing though.

Also, Valley, you said on another thread that you should only borrow as much as your anticipated starting salary. Even if I just stayed on to my full time job year round (and not take any of the other offers or go to law school like I plan on doing), my starting salary would be higher than the loans I am taking out.

Unfortunately the tornado that ripped through Michigan yesterday left my boyfriend’s house in shambles so I wasn’t thinking entirely clearly these last 24 hours.

Was there a tornado in metro Detroit? Or is he living somewhere else? We drove home from our family’s cottage yesterday afternoon & were caught in what looked like hurricane force winds/rain … I had to pull into a parking lot, as I could not see anything on the road. Scary! When we got to the Battle Creek area, there were big trees uprooted everywhere, and several were blocking lanes on I-94. Thankfully, we didn’t see any damaged vehicles on the road. I hope your BF is okay, other than being shaken. How badly was his house damaged?

^ He lives IN Battle Creek. We were actually driving back from Florida when the storms hit and both he and another friend we were with are from BC. Since they weren’t there, they are both fine. His house roof is completely gone and so is part of the upstairs. Luckily, no one was in the house (both of his brothers are at MSU for grad school classes and his parents live in Flint). Our friend’s house was not badly damaged and luckily no one we know was hurt.

Battle Creek has really become my home since my boy and I started dating. I have far more friends there than I do in metro Detroit.

Oh, I am so sorry … I do know how bad BC is, as we pulled off the road at one point thinking it might be easier to take the surface streets. Boy,were we wrong! The area was devastated. I am so glad to hear that no one at his house was hurt. A roof can be replaced; people cannot.

Thanks.I haven’t been out there yet, but the pictures my friends have been posting are just heart-breaking. I wanted to head out there tomorrow, but I’m working about 9 AM until 10 PM Tuesday until Friday and then until about 5 on Saturday, so a 2 hour drive isn’t feasible until Saturday :/.

They were using his old high school as a shelter, and school is cancelled tomorrow. I’m not sure what they’re going to do with the people whose homes were lost or unlivable when school opens back up. My bf is staying with friends in Kzoo, but a lot of the people there have no where to go and hotels are full. Battle Creek was such a hard-hit area economically… this was the last thing they, or anyone obviously, needed. We are so grateful that no one was hurt. Especially after all the news stories about Joplin over the last week.

Well Swimcat if your daughter graduates with no relevant work experience, a liberal studies degree and no technical certifications then she isn’t much more marketable than someone that has 2 years experience supervising the front counter at a McDonalds. When my parents generation graduated college 30 years ago college degrees had more value since much fewer people had a degree. Now I know several college graduates working junky retail and fast food jobs.

Good for you gypsyeyes! I am glad you are responsible. Unfortunately I like posting about irresponsibility because maybe someone will read this and realize that 50k in loans is not worth it for a bachelors degree in art, the social sciences, liberal studies, or music. I just posted on a guy that wanted to take out 80k to get a BA in accounting.

The work experience will set you apart from your peers if you have good grades. To get a good job now right out of college recruiters want 3 things; demonstrated leaders, work experience, and good grades. In the late 90’s if you had one of those things you would have been able to find a good job. =P

^ Yes, but what you posted was irrelevant to my situation. I am no where near the 50k mark- but there are PLENTY of threads on here that are. You might want to go talk to them instead, if you want to warn other people. My thread is specially talking about Stafford loans (which are all I have taken out) and if you only take out Stafford loans, you can’t get anywhere near the 50k mark as an undergrad.

I guess I just can’t stand when people make snap judgments about me because I’m a liberal arts major (I am also a social science major, too…). It happens all too often on this forum so it gets really obnoxious.

OP, what was the final outcome? What did they say?

^ Well, I haven’t called them yet because I realized it’s a moot point. My FA package will change to:

Fall:
Donor Award $2,500.00
FED College Work Study $1,500.00
FED Direct Subsidized Ln $2,061.00
FED Pell Grant $2,775.00
Student Aid Grant $2,900.00
FED Supp Ed Opp Grant $175.00
TOTAL $11,911.00

Spring:
Donor Award $2,500.00
FED College Work Study $1,500.00
FED Direct Subsidized Ln $2,061.00
FED Pell Grant $2,775.00
FED Perkins Loan $390.00
Student Aid Grant $2,900.00
FED Supp Ed Opp Grant $175.00
TOTAL $11,911.00

when my KFC scholarship goes in. That is well under the $5500 subsidized limit. I had just completely forgotten about my scholarship.

I can still call the FA office if you guys want to know for future reference. This board has done a lot for me and I would have no problem spending some time on the phone so that you guys could use what I learn to help people in the future lol.

romanigypsyeyes – Sorry to hear about your BF’s house. My husband’s aunt had a lot of destruction on hers in BC as well. She ended up in the basement and was def very shook up but otherwise ok.

Just a quick thought on the loan limits. As you may recall, McSon goes to UMich and I noticed that for the first time since he’s been attending HIS loans in total were above the normal limits. I was going to write and ask why. Then I found this so it looks like the loan max/limits has been upped - now $23,000 sub and $31k unsub; $5500 sub for Jr and Sr plus $2000 unsub ([Stafford Loan Information | StaffordLoan.com](<a href=“What is a Subsidized Student Loan? | Edvisors”>What is a Subsidized Student Loan? | Edvisors))

I also wondered if the Michigan funding situation/axing all state scholarship programs etc. has increased the need for loans with the elimination of other programs/grants/etc.

Either way, McSon is socking away his savings this summer and electing not to have car/ insurance and not doing full meal plan, etc. b/c his loan amount is “creeping” beyond his comfort zone ;)

He returned to his house today and apparently it doesn’t look quite as bad as it did when he first saw his house. He went inside for the first time today and apparently it’s just most of the attic that is gone along with only the front part of the roof. Still crappy, but MUCH better than it could have been. I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s aunt, but I’m glad she’s ok. I’m heading out there tomorrow night to see everything for myself. Apparently, even a few days later, powers still out in a bunch of places and there are still downed power lines everywhere. School was cancelled again today.

Side note: I never read your name as k-McMom. It was always K-M-C mom (like initials). Anyway… lol

Even if the lifetime loan max/limits have been upped, it still doesn’t explained why I was offered more for the year than allowed, unless they’re allowed to use my unused loans from previous years (the time when I didn’t accept the full loan) and roll them over to this year (like mom2 talked about earlier).

At this point, I might call them on Friday just for my own curiosity. And if it was made in error somehow (is it even possible that it could have been?) then it might not just affect me. It happened before that apparently a bunch of the financial aid requests for the summer I studied abroad were “lost” between the study abroad office and the financial aid department. They never bothered to tell us and I was the only one in my study abroad group that was vigilant enough about my FA to even bother calling to see why my FA package looked so low (they had awarded me FA for on-campus summer semester rather than for studying abroad). 4 out of the 6 people in my group were supposed to have a much larger FA package than they received and they would have just accepted the one that was given to them and never known that their application for FA never made it to the FA office.
