Currently I'm a high school junior. As of right now my grades are very poor, roughly a 2.6 GPA(weighted). However i do have some good EC's. Recently I've founded a club at my school educating my peers about the stock market and other finance related topics. In this club we also practice investing, have guest speakers, and learn investment strategies. In addition to this I am also on the Fed Challenge team. This is a club that learns about the economy and competes at a state level in a competition hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. I am also in the Italian club. Outside of School I try to get in community service when I have time, as well as being a member of my local church's catholic youth group. This group does many things mostly related to helping our local communities. Also I'm not sure how much this matters but I also was able to get a School board policy revoked at my school, the policy being that every student who does not pay an activity fee must pay $60 to join. This policy discouraged many people from participating in activities outside of school. As for my SAT scores I plan to take them soon. I'm expecting to get something near an 1800, as a receive lessons weekly. Also I know I can get great letters of recommendations as well as show strong interest in the school. Please let me know what you think my chances are. PS- I know my grades are not quite up to Fordham standards, but when I was there I was told that showing a grade curve counts a lot, long with demonstration of leadership.

I had a great GPA and good testing scores, but lacked extracurriculars. So I suppose I’m the opposite haha. Anyways, since your GPA is so low, you should aim higher than a 1800 on the SAT or even try the ACT in case you do better on that. Your extracurriculars might help your case, but it’s never too late to try to raise your GPA. Right now, I would say ( if you get at least an 1800) your chances of getting in are decent. I didn’t have to send in recommendation letters, but those should help you too. Don’t bet on getting in, but ,yes, you do have a chance.

I would write a note explaining your lower grades and emphasizing your GPA for Junior year if it is signficantly higher than your overall GPA. Does you high school offer the scattergrams via Naviance, where you can look at a chart that shows who from your school applied to Fordham over the last 10 years, who got in , who was rejected and what their stats are? Ask your guidance counselor. This is a very helpful tool in predicting acceptance.

Well I don’t really have a sufficient reason for receiving the grades that I did in my previous years. However my grades are significantly higher now than they were. And I have used naviance before and it said there were multiple people getting in with a gpa below a 3.0. Although it’s still unclear because the people getting in with low GPA’s could have been people applying to the arts school.

And If anyone has some advice on what else I could do to better my chances, I’m very open to suggestions.

Can somebody else chance me?

MMicele,

Well, those are not good grades for a school where the current admission stats (for the class of 2015) are: Acceptance rate: 42%, GPA range: 3.7, SAT-mid 50%: 1830-2050.

So chances are not very good. However, they are not impossible. You should schedule an interview with admissions and plead your case. At the very least they can note your desire for Fordham and circumstances for the grades you got. Also, 2-3 stong letters of recommendation from teachers would also help. If you have any relatives who went to Fordham, note that on the app and have THEM send a letter on your behalf. SHOW INTEREST…a lot can be said for sheer desire and Fordham does note that.

I say this to all kids I speak to on college: you should apply to at least 5 schools (I call this Ray’s Five Fickle Fingers of Fate Rule), One should be a super safe school (local community or city college), 3 schools that are in your range of acceptance for your grades and SATs, and one school for your reach, your dream school that you don’t fully meet the requirements of but would love to go to…perhaps this would be Fordham. This way you have a decent range of one or more schools you should get into.

And may the Fickle Fingers of Fate all point to you!!!

There is one other way…last resort, if you will…

Let’s say you don’t get accepted BUT you really, really want to go to Fordham. Do well where ever you wind up, get a 3.0 average then after a year, after you have demonstrated your ability to do college work, apply for transfer! I don’t think you would have any issue then.

I would definitely schedule an interview with admissions, but I thought they didn’t relly take time to speak to high school juniors.
