Hey guys! I'm a junior on my second semester, but I have few ideas for what I want my major to be. I want to work in a free environment, without complicated math or science (trigonometry, calculus, botany, that kind of stuff) and something I can be in command (maybe be my own boss). It could be in a group or alone. I'm especially attracted to entertainment and visual arts (I would be a photographer myself if it was a stable job). Effectively, I want something that is more experimental, creative, not memorizing stuff from a book, or typing endless C/C++ programming codes. Any ideas? Really, anything can help!

Does your school have a career center? If so, set up an appointment and meet with one of the counselors there. They have lots of tools to help students figure out what direction they want to go professionally, and what kind of skills/interests match with what fields. Run through the internships and job placements to see where graduating seniors with your interests and profile have gone in the past. What you major in is generally less important than knowing what skills you have to offer that would interest an employer, what you like to do and are good at, how to present yourself effectively and how that matches up with various careers.

Next summer, once you have some ideas, think about doing alumni informational interviews, preferably in person, with alums who are working the field(s) you find most interesting and find out what kind of educational background they had, where the field is going and what advice they would give to someone looking for a first job in that area.
