The origin of Tarheel just never came up. I did watch the UNC Syracuse football overtime game from the UNC alumni section with two free tickets someone just gave me outside the stadium. That was nice. It was sunny and warm.
Carrboro is just outside CH. Don't know about the population thing. Another popular suburb is Cary.

I'll be out there again next month on my way from Lynchburg to Charleston. Should I get you a Tshirt or something?

The undergraduate experiences are different. You seem to think all state schools, of a certain size, are similar. They are not. That's like saying UCLA is like UMichigan. That Iowa City (UIowa) and UTexas are similar. That UC-Berkeley and UVA are alike. That UC-Santa Barbara and the College of William and Mary are similar.

That is why I'm surprised you would be positive that in every way, except weather, UW is better.

In the belief of being transparent, Again I love my home state, but jeez...not so much that I can see no flaws. BTW, I did apply to UW before I knew what I wanted out of a college experience. And I would still attend if I had to. I mean no offense with my post. Just very curious now.

IB

Funny that it doesn't come up....heard the story many times....how the southern soilders fought with shoes that fell apart and were only left with tar--and walked home with courage.

Right, about the town of Carrboro, but Cary is a few miles past Durham, where Duke is located. BTW UNC is known as "The Southern part of Heaven", while Jesse Helms used to call it a liberal zoo.

A shirt would be great....I'll take one in Carolina Blue, please. :)

UCLA is more like Michigan than it is like most other schools. Westwood is much like downtown AA with more theaters and higher rents. Not sure about Iowa and Texas but Madison and Austin were pretty similar except for the weather.

I do know how badgers became the nickname for Wisconsin.

I was all set to go last fall to the Wisconsin-UNC football game but got sick and had to cancel. That's why we are going now instead--without the football game.

That would have been an interesting game. But, this time should be fun, as well. Carolina not as footballsy as UW so you have more time to people watch go out, etc....

Badger...because they are tenacious (sic)?

Just got back from Madtown last week...and I drove, so it was interesting. It was a blast. State Street was jumpin'.

Kollege Klub, and Rathskeller...too bad Mendota is still a little icy...should be awesome to hang out there and listen to the bands/comedy acts...a little apart from those inside (kinda dark) the student Union.

Should warn you that lots of construction is going on....so the drive in front of Lake Mendota has a few detours.

Badgers because early Cornish miners lived in small caves in the ground--like badgers.

Mendota is just breaking up right now--a little late due to late cold snaps. Much better outside in the summer when you have a couple of thousand people listening to bands and watching the sunset.

Hope you capped off the evening with the required gyros or giant burrito.

Yeah...I actually did.

I seriously thought about going to UW-Madison. But, parents believe it to be too similar to UDub. It's not that big a deal, but I wish my parents had said something early...rather than making it a tougher one now. Typically, I'd go with the out-of-state school for a change in ethos and culture, but...I need to convince my parents.

They see UTexas, UC-Berkeley, UVA in much the same terms, but are more willing to spend money on private universities!!! Weird, especially since I like the state schools better; They want Ivy, I want...LACs, or state schools with honors programs. Some of those privates I can't justify. Go figure.

It is hard for me to justify Washington folks spending the extra $$$ to send kids to Madison--and I recruit for Wis at the College Fairs in Seattle. I think Udub is underrated.

Madison, weird as this sounds seems more laidback and less frenetic. I understand that UW--Madison is more midwestern in feel, and I appreciate it. UDub, by virtue of location feels fast moving. Great for having fun, but a little less good for studying.

Madiosn is definately a party school, but it seems more casual. And, the midwesterners I know tend to be more direct and less pc. Just as enlighted about the "isms", but less intense. Yes, I've had freinds at UW-Madison be ummm...extreme, but UDub friends tend to be either apathetic or way involved. (I know that generalizations are hard at larger schools, but those are the ones that jumped out).

Oh, I forgot to mention one thing...if I go to UW, I'll be required to spend my first year living at home.

I have a bad feeling about this, OP. If your parents are going to make you live at home if you go to school in Seattle, what are the odds they're going to let you go out of state to college? I think all the angst you're suffering right now may be for nothing. Have you flat-out asked your parents whether they'll let you go to UNC if you decide that's where you want to go?
