Is it through AP tests or do they have a separate placement exam?

depends on what type of placement you are talking about.
you can get credit for certain ap score - http://www.brandeis.edu/uaa/advpol/ap.html

there are also placement tests in foreign language and math to help you determine what level you belong at: see this link for important info (note its says new info for students entering fall 2006 will be posted in june) http://www.brandeis.edu/registrar/newstudent.html

you should receive more info from the school when they send you registration materials.

here's another link you may find helpful: http://www.brandeis.edu/uaa/fys/resources.html

unbelievablem, thank you very much for the information. If you don't mind, I hope you can help me answer this question. After reading through the FAQ's and the information on the website, I'm still kinda of confused. For one, does Brandeis place you in a higher level math course by the score of your AP grade, or by the score of your placement exam? When exactly do we take these exams? Also, the exam is self administered--what does that mean? Say if you get a 2 on the AP exam, can you still place yourself in a higher level math course? Thank you so much for taking the time to help, unbelievablem.

did you read the page about the math placement test? http://www.brandeis.edu/registrar/math.html

it includes a link to a contact person to ask specific questions you may have about appropriate placement. you don't register until later in the summer -- so you have time to wait and see what you get on the AP, take the placement test (at your convenience), and then contact this person to ask any specific question you have as to what your appropriate placement should be.

since i am a parent, not a brandeis student, i won't try to give you any advise as to how the process actually works -- but in general, i think students end up with a lot of choice in registering - you just want to be careful in exercising those choices. you will have opportuinities over the summer to get advising input from the school - so you won't have to make those decisions without help.
