Ok well first of all I want to start off by asking everyone to please not tell me that I might change my mind about being a doctor (I'm not saying its impossible for me to change my mind just that I don't need people to tell me things like this or anything similar, just answer the question). I worry a lot about my future and whether or not I'll be able to get into med school or not even though it is a long ways away. I can't stop thinking about it and it is wasting my life right now so I just want some assurance of whether or not you think I have a fair chance at med school. Also please don't say anything like 20%, 50%, ect. just say some thing like "likely, not likely, could go either way, probably, ect."

Ok also I am a high school sophomore and I know there are people who will say it is too early to think about it but I just need to get chanced now to get it off my mind. Also I realize that high school doesn't count and I have done a lot of research about med schools so I know the process and everything.

Academics
-I go to a top NE prep school so the classes are vigorous and everyone is really smart (kids coming from different countries to go there)
-I am in the top 10% unweighted
-I take the hardest course load which only about 10 other kids do so factoring that in I would be top 5 out of 100 kids in my grade.
-I have a 4.0 unweighted

Athletics
-1 year 4ths soccer (quit after freshmen year)
-1 year 4ths squash (quit after freshmen year)
-1 year Varsity Track (will be 4 by end of high school)
-1 year JV XC (will be 3 by end of high school)
-1 year JV swimming (will be 3 by end of high school)

Clubs
-I am in like 6 clubs, no leadership positions yet but probably will by end of high school

I plan to volunteer a lot once I'm in college and also do research and I am hoping to get into either duke or cornell

please I can't stop worrying about how my future will be ruined if I go though college doing either a bio or chem major ( I love science) and then don't get into med school.

You’re asking for the impossible. “Chancing” you requires that we know your marks on the things med schools care about…college GPA, MCAT score, etc.

I mean, really, what good is it for me to say “likely” today, when 6 years from now, you may get a 12 on the MCAT and you enter the “snowball’s chance in hell” range? Will it make you sleep easier tonight?

I would like to help, but there’s just nothing for me to say. Anything I could say beyond “it’s possible you’ll get in, it’s possible that you won’t” would be a lie.

What I would suggest is that you take this anxiety youre having and use it as motivation to begin considering what other careers you may enjoy. Perhaps you’ll feel better if you realize that there a great many fields that fit your interests and may even be a better suit of your talents than Medicine. Knowing that you could excel in any number of professions may alleviate the worry about your future. And it’s okay not to know what you’re ideal #2 career choice might be - it wasn’t until my 2nd semester of junior year in college that I even realized my most perfect “backup” position really existed, and it wasn’t until well into my first semester senior year (while I was in the middle of med school applications) that I realized how much I would love doing that job on a daily basis. What is not okay is refusing to consider any other career fields other than medicine, or to believe that just because you can’t think of anything else, that medicine is the best possible field for you. You don’t have to have an answer, but you do have to be looking.

Seriously? I am a senior and desperately trying to get into my “dream” UNDERGRAD school. I see that your stat is very good, but worrying about med school is impossible. I know a lot of people got straight A’s through hs and backsliding in college (hope that is not you), and a lot who screwed up in hs yet found the motivation to get high gpa in college. I also want to go to med school but i cannot think that far ahead if I cannot get in college first. Well, at least with that stat, you can pretty much go to most of the prestigious school.

The reason why people tell you it is to early to worry is because it is too early to know. You have yet to do anything that will be evaluated by med school admissions and thus don’t worry about your chances when you have yet to be chance able. Just keep up the hard work and focus on your college chances.
