Can students hang things like large white boards on dorm walls?

Our ds really likes working out his physics and math problems on a white board. Are students able to hang large white boards on the walls in their dorm room?

Thanks!

My S’s was approx 3’x4’ and magnetic w/ cork strip at the bottom to pin additional stuff. Much bigger than that might be questionable. You def can’t use those expandable wall anchors, which are required for something over a certain weight. Those would leave pretty sizable holes.

These work well and no holes. This is not the only company that makes them.

yes. there are also study rooms in the dorms. some students have been known to use the windows as whiteboards.

Could you stick those on the door? I am wondering if he could hang a 3X4 on the wall and maybe do the stick on on the door?

If you have ever seen Numb3rs, he works like Charlie Epps. ;)

I don’t think on doors. My S’s dorm room has a 6-panel door, so it’s not one large smooth surface.

You could use an over-the-door hanging system, tho, and hang the board from that w/ no holes. It would probably bang every time you opened/closed, however…

There really is not that much free wall space in the dorm room itself. If he’s in a suite and the other don’t mind, maybe you could get a large one for the common room or the hallway.

Would you happen to know the width of the doors? I wonder if the over the door with the 3M removeable stickies on the bottom to keep it from banging might work.

It would not be able to be very big (the board), as the doors are ‘standard’, which is usually 30" across. The board would have to be 2’6" or so wide only. I say put a huge sticky note in the hallway! (but lighting is rather poor there…) The closet doors in RS are smooth (they slide, not bi-fold), and you could put large stickies on those?

Actually, I would have to confirm my point about smooth closet doors. They might be paneled as well…not sure, sorry. I thought I had pics of everything, but don’t have detail of the closet doors.

which dorm? the doors are smooth in RCS.

Not sure about whether closet doors in Riverside are smooth or paneled. Anyone else know?..

I appreciate all the help. Ds wants to stay in the honors dorms. He doesn’t get to sign up until the 8th, though .

My son is in RCS. His bed is normal height (not lofted). We hung his whiteboard over his bed year #1 because that was really the only spot it could go and we had brought him one, but he never used it because of where it was. The bed takes up pretty much one whole long wall. The rest of the furniture is lined up on the opposing wall. The window is on the short wall. There is very little wall space you can stand next to.

Maybe this would work for your son. He could store it at the end of his bed and then pull it near his desk/computer when he wanted to use it or even pull it into the common area if he wanted to work with his RMs or friends.

Ohh, that is a definite option! Thanks for the link! The fact that it is double sided is great.

I like the easel style better because the legs can be folded and placed flat behind the bed or furniture when not in use.

The removable white sheets are difficult to write on unless the wall they they are applied on is perfectly smooth.

ds went to pick up his older disabled brother from work at Goodwill tonight and was walking around inside while waiting for him to gather his stuff. He said just standing in the middle of the aisle was a double -sided white board easel for $8. Score!! That was an easy decision!! :)

NO WAY?! <shaft of="" light="" beams="" down=""> VERY cool! :)</shaft>

The doors in Riverside are 6-paneled. Although, it looks like you already solved the problem! ;)
