Can we talk to the B and C students about college?

@bjkmom - Thanks for sharing your S story. We are going to continue to apply get my D applications out.
We have several we are waiting for answers on. We are trying both the test optional and non test optional routes.
We are not in a position to be very choicey. Hearing 1 or 2 acceptances would be a blessing…My daughter scored lower than your S on the SAT, but has a higher GPA. He seems to be doing fine. Hopefully with the test option opportunities my daughter will be fine too.
Thanks (stressed out MOM)

@happykid2 My college prep school has a Senior class of 600 kids this year. In the 25+ years I’ve been there, we’ve graduated thousands and thousands of kids, all of whom have gone on to college. But not all of whom have been A students. Most of whom have not been in NHS. Some of whom have attended summer school.

Rest assured: there IS a lid for every pot. Your daughter will find the right school, she will find success.

@happykid2

More schools to consider:
East Stroudsberg (PA) 25th percentile scores math/reading 350/ 390
Newbury (MA) 380/ 380
Becker (MA ) 380/ 370
Cabrini (PA) 390/ 390
Neumann (PA) 380/ 300
Anna Maria (MA) 390/400

@happykid2 Most direct entry BSN nursing programs have minimum SAT requirements for admission, even in schools which are otherwise test-optional or have lower overall standards for admission. East Stroudsburg (mentioned above) requires at least 500 in each of CR and M. IUP and Edinboro (other Pennsylvania state schools) specify a CR + M score of at least 1030, or an ACT of 22. More selective schools have higher requirements. Neumann (also mentioned above) is a possibility with lower SAT scores, as is Carlow University in Pittsburgh. Please be aware that many nursing programs have their students take multiple standardized tests for review and for preparation for the all-important NCLEX. This may be a stumbling block for a student who typically doesn’t do well on standardized tests. Also, the coursework and clinical standards in most BSN programs tend to be quite rigorous.

Thanks for the info.

@kidzncatz thanks for the the info

@bjkmom thanks for this thread. I think CC can be very discouraging to “average” students and their parents, but there are some great resources here. I am so glad that your son is getting acceptance letters, and that your hard work has paid off.

@happykid2 good luck with you daughter, I am sure she will find the right spot. Don’t over think the nursing thing yet, so many people think they want to do that and then change their mind. I am sorry she didn’t get in ECU, they have really made changes in admission in the last few years, and their online stats don’t really reflect yet, it can be disappointing to many HS students. Did your daughter do any better on the ACT? I believe all NC schools take that their jr year. UNC-G might be a great option, or Western Carolina.

This is such a great thread, thank you!

Here’s our story: DS class of '17 has an 88 GPA so far, which our GC called a 3.5 but looks to me should be a 3.2 or 3.3. He hasn’t taken the SAT as a high schooler, but he got approx 1100 M + CR as a 7th grader so I’m hoping he’ll do well on the SAT in the spring. When the PSAT results come out in Dec. we’ll have a better idea.

His older siblings are academic superstars and I think that pressure has been very discouraging for him, but now (finally!) he seems to be taking grades more seriously. Maybe his GPA will go up a bit after this year. He doesn’t know what he wants to study, just that he wants to run cross country and track.

We’re focusing on NYS schools to take advantage of TAP, which we’ll almost max out. We need schools that will give good FA and merit, and if he goes out of state, we lose almost $3000 in TAP. Also, if he goes out of state, he’ll want to go south; he seems to have missed out on our Norwegian genes and hates, nay, despises the cold.

So, right now we’re look at our local CC, Binghamton (reach probably), Alfred State, Buffalo State, lots of SUNY schools. I wonder if he might have a shot at Berea College (we fall into the Appalachia region, barely). This thread alerted me to the merit possibilities at St. Bonaventure, which we’ll explore but is still out of reach unless a few thousand dollars of athletic money were to come into play.

Are are any southern schools that would give $$ to a student with these stats?

http://competitivefulltuition.yolasite.com/ lists some competitive scholarships.

Thank you! I’ll look at these.

@ITBgirl - yes we decided not to over think the nursing field. She has applied to UNG also, which is my choice for
her. The denial from ECU makes me feel like she won’t get in there either. It would be in state and much cheaper than the OOS options. Right now we have applications out to UNCG, VCU ( test optional), and WSSU. She plans to apply to ODU (test optional) this week. I will research Western Carolina tonight.
Thank you so much for the positive thoughts and advice. Cross your fingers for us.

@happykid2, have you considered having your daughter take the ACT. You may try to have her take a practice test. How are her grades in chem, bio, physics, and calc?

@happykid2 Since out of state tuition at the Virginia schools is so much higher than the instate tuition at North Carolina schools, you might want to consider Edinboro University in northwest Pennsylvania if the North Carolina schools don’t work out. Out of state tuition is about $10,000 per year, only slightly more than for instate students, and the acceptance rate last year was 99%. However, your daughter would have to be OK with lots of snow. She might prefer community college in warm North Carolina!

@kidzncatz (straight face)

@happykid2 if you really like the idea of UNCG consider trying to get an interview, like ECU they are the safety school for so many NC students but I feel if they know that you really want to go there, and can meet your daughter and see that she is more than just her test scores, it could help. Fingers crossed!

@happykid2 you might also look at Wingate, Campbell and Guilford (I think this one is on colleges that change lives list) You might could go small private and keep her instate for the same cost as some of the OSS schools you are applying to. I know they may not be the big universities that she was hoping for but a HS head cheerleader could be a rock star at a smaller school :smiley:

I am concerned that if we keep promoting college for the B and C students, then the plumbers, carpenters and electricians will all come out of the ‘D’ students.

And that might make it hard to get quality construction.

@JustOneDad Really?

Really, what?
