Or can you only apply RD to other schools? Thanks!
Typically ED only allows you to apply EA to public schools, but you should consult the ED agreement.
@Sunny66 I was reading it on the website and it wasn’t exactly clear about whether or not we could apply ea elsewhere… it just said we could RD
Yes, you can apply EA to public schools and even a few private schools that don’t place any restrictions on EA (such as MIT or Caltech), but you can’t apply EA to private schools that have restricted forms of EA (such as HYPS or Notre Dame or Georgetown). In addition, a few ED schools have implemented or contemplated to implement a more restricted form of ED which explicitly disallow simultaneous applications to private EA schools, but WashU isn’t among them.
OP is correct that WashU does not directly address whether ED applicants can apply to EA schools (whether public or private) on their website, or in the FAQs. https://admissions.wustl.edu/apply_site/Pages/Early-Decision.aspx
I do think ED applicants can apply EA to other schools (as long as those schools allow an ED elsewhere). But, this is a valid reason to reach out to your AO and ask.
If it’s not explicitly prohibited, it’s allowed by default. That’s always been the case.
It’s preferable that students (and parents) not make assumptions about things left unsaid. College websites don’t always state important facts, and there is no downside to asking questions about factors that colleges don’t directly address.
Yes, you can apply EA to other schools as long as they do not have restrictions. You must withdraw all applications if you are accepted ED. My son applied to 3 schools EA and was accepted before he heard from WashU. Hardest part was turning down a lot of merit money!!!
how has your son’s experience at Wash U been so far…my son likes WUSTL also (we live in STL), he knows he likely needs to apply ED to get in, but likely will have other options with merit where Wash U won’t likely have any. What is he studying?
@DG My son absolutely loves WashU! He is a chemistry major and is doing very well. My son also knew he should apply ED as I am alum and that would help. No regrets . . . he is very happy and at “home”!
thank you so much 1NJParent !!
Waldo755, I’m actually going to apply as a chemistry major!
