Are we allowed to choose more than one major or an alternate major to apply to? I’m asking because I want to do BS industrial engineering but only 3 of the Cal States (Cal Poly Slo, Pomona, and S) have it. So does that mean I can only really apply to those schools? Or can I broaden my scope by adding majors that are more popular (like Computer Science)?
Very few Cal states will consider an alternate major. CPP does consider an alternate major while Cal Poly SLO does not. S is SJSU in your post? SJSU does consider alternate majors also. Also Cal State East Bay offers IE.
For CPP, you should apply for your first choice major if that is EI (which is not impacted currently) but selecting an impacted major like CS as an alternate is not recommended and will not be considered.
If CS is your first choice, then definitely apply for CS and then put a non-impacted major as an alternate such as IE.
So if I put Industrial Engineering as my first choice major, then it will only really be towards Cal Poly SLO, CPP, SJSU, and East Bay right?
And I think Industrial Engineering actually is impacted at CPP. Also, I’m an out of state student if that makes things any different.
If IE is your 1st choice, then yes apply with that major. IE is impacted at CPP (??? CPP website states differently), SLO and SJSU but not East Bay.
As an OOS applicant, Cal States require a higher EI for you to apply, but based on your other threads, you seem competitive.
Also you mentioned using the WUE discount which would only apply to Cal Poly Pomona and East Bay. SJSU and SLO do not participate in the WUE program. You would be full pay at SJSU and SLO.
Which Cal States consider/accept alternate majors?
Cal Poly Pomona and San Jose state are the 2 campuses that consider alternate majors.
For SJSU:
You must enter an alternate major on your application to SJSU. We will consider the alternate major for those applicants who did not meet the impaction threshold to their first choice major. We will only admit to alternate majors if there is additional capacity for new student enrollment in that major. For Fall 2020, the evaluation process to determine which majors have the capacity to admit applicants to alternate majors will continue through the beginning of March.
Cal Poly Pomona:
Cal Poly Pomona will consider you for admissions to your alternate major if space is available and cannot guarantee consideration for your alternate major/program. We prioritize applicants within the same academic college.
