My son is plannig to take SAT II physics in June. However, he is not sure if he is ready by June. My question is if he can register the test first and then cancel the test late? Could this show on his SAT record?

Nope. Just don't show up on test date and your test will be automatically cancelled. Nothing will be on his record. Of course, you won't get your money back. However you can switch the test to a different subject on test day (if your son is ready for a different test) and you can add tests if you want to (i think, check on this).

Like icyfire said, theres no way to cancel your test and get money back. However, if test day comes and your son is not ready to take the test, he can pay a fee (about $15, I think) to have the test date moved. If you choose not to show up for the test, no record of that registration is kept and the colleges that you chose to send score reports to do not get any reports. Also, as icyfire said, your son can choose to take another test instead of Physics or choose to add additional tests. Both those changes can be made on test day, and if you do the latter, you will be billed for the extra test (but changing tests is free)
