Can you get AP Credit in conservatories?

Hi, this is probably a really dumb question, but I have to ask. If you have a 4 or 5 on AP tests, could you get credit for the required regular college courses while in a conservatory?

That's going to be up to the conservatory. Check the Web site of the school you're interested in.

DS got 6 credits toward humanities reqs at Peabody for AP Psych and AP English. He won't graduate early on that, but it gave him some flexibility in his schedule when he wanted to take on some extra ensemble work.

You can most certainly get AP credit at most places, in lieu of a few of your liberal arts requirements.

However, AP Music Theory, for example, will almost certainly not replace any of your core theory curriculum at the conservatory.

You might be able to place out of the basic college writing class with a high AP score. At NEC this is true.

At some schools, you can also get out of the freshman writing class with a high enough SAT or ACT score. Oberlin Conservatory, for example, waives it for anyone who gets at least a 580 on their SAT verbal or a 24 on their ACT. You do not get credit for the class in this case, but you can use the slot to take something else.

i'll pm you bassdad thx

Not Always. You have to talk to the Dean of Admissions. Academic Dean or Registar at each conservatory to find out what they will accept and how they will adjust your courses to reflect what you have taken. We were wondering the same thing as my D has 5 if those "5's", and upon inquiring at each school, that was what we were told. At one school, she was even told that "the purpose of going to college is to go to college, and you need to take the same classes as your peers so that you can be a part of things". But, that was only one person and it turns out that, at that conservatory, he wasn't the one who ultimately made the decision anyway.

Juilliard doesn't award AP credit.

It depends on the conservatory. You need to ask them. Schools have varying policies on the AP awarding. Regardless...agreed with others....a 5 on the AP theory exam will not give you course credit in theory at any conservatory (or in any music major program that I know of).

Son did not get any credit but was able to opt out of the required intro Humanities course at Eastman by getting a 5 on the English Lang. test. He also was able to place into a higher language class by his AP score in French.
