I know that when regular MD students want to get into dermatology, they first have to do a one year internship in some field such as internal medicine or something, and then after apply to the 3 year dermatology residency.

What I am wondering is, if I do the MD/PhD program, can I get into a 3 year dermatology residency without having to do that extra one year internship?

For both md and md/phd grads though there are categorical derm programs where you do your prelim year at the same place as your derm residency.

Even if you don’t do them at the same place, most people match into their prelim program and derm program at the same time so there is only one application cycle. In fact if you only matched into your prelim year I would imagine your chances of matching the following year into derm would be pretty slim.

But I agree with above, you haven’t even gotten into med school yet so worrying about how you’ll speed through one of the top 3 most competitive specialties is ludicrous.

-It is still 1+3 years from what I know, correct?

Or were you asking about categorical programs specifically? Categorical programs don’t shorten anything, the only thing they “offer” is that you are doing your medicine intern year and derm residency in the same place so there is no need to move/get accustomed to a different hospital/city after your first year. Additionally you list it as one item in the match as opposed to the whole mess of ranking the combo of pre-lim+advanced programs.
