Hey ya’ll. I’m a rising senior currently putting together my college list to apply to. I am planning on majoring in political science. I have a 31 act, but am planning to retake. I’m looking for a small- medium sized school that offers opportunities for things such as internships. I would like to stay on the east coast. I’m also looking for a college that has a good mix of clubs and intramural/ club sports & preferably near a town that has lots of stuff to do. Thank you all in advance
Tufts and Vassar as reaches.
Skidmore, Dickinson, Denison, Hobart-and-WilliamSmith, Muhlenberg, American.
If you push West, Macalester.
Adding Trinity and College of the Holy Cross to the good suggestions above
^^Trinity has an internship program with the CT legislature and Holy Cross has a Washington DC semester for political science majors with an internship component.
U of Pittsburgh is medium-sized. And in an interesting city. U of Delaware, Boston College, Providence. It is helpful for internships if the college is in or near the state capital or Wash. DC.
Yes BC^
What’s your GPA and do you know class standing/percentile? That would help with suggestions.
University of Mississippi has the Trent Lott Institute which offers a Political Science Major with a major component in DC. Oxford is a Medium sized town, with Memphis only an hour’s drive north. http://lottinst.olemiss.edu
Assuming you are out of state, a student can get 12,550 a year solely for having an ACT score of 31. The total cost per year is 22,740, so you would still have to come up with 10k per year, but there are plenty of other scholarship opportunities. Also if you can boost that ACT score a 33+ is full tuition paid for which is about 19,000
@collegemomjam I have a 3.909 GPA (Unweighted). I don’t know my exact rank, but I believe I am around 15/450
BC as a reach (they superscore too)
Bucknell (although it is a small town) and potentially Richmond although it may be too far (ED at these schools would position you best)
I think University of Richmond would be perfect for you! I got in (not waitlisted) with a 25 ACT and had a 3.9 GPA. There was a girl in my school who had lower ranks than that who also got in!
However, Richmond is competitive and depending on where you are from/ or what type of school it could be harder to get in.
Richmond is a nice, small school with only around 800 in each incoming class. It has around a 30 percent acceptance rate (I heard it dipped this year). At Richmond you will be guaranteed 4,000$ for an internship or research (you could get even more or apply again another year, I have heard).
Richmond is, obviously, in Richmond and close to many areas for shopping, visiting, etc. Above all, it is a gorgeous campus! There are many clubs and is 2hrs~ away from most other places in VA. if you ever feel you need to hit the beach, see the capitol, etc.
PM me if you have more questions or see the UR threads!
Hope you think about being a Spider (our mascot)!
Northeastern would be medium sized, has one of the top co-op programs in the country, and is in the heart of Boston. Reach school.
I would second, or third, Holy Cross. The academics are as good as at any school, and political science is a strength. It has an impressive student profile but is not as competitive as schools with similarly strong programs (still competitive). You might also look into Wake Forest–google “Wake the Vote.” It’s an impressive program, really the type of thing the country needs now. William and Mary is also terrific for political science. Jen Psaki and James Comey are alums.
Smith
Another vote for Dickinson.
