Can you use a letter of rec. that is tailored for one job, for a DIFFERENT job?

Hi guys,

It is really hard to put my question into few enough words for the title, but what I am asking is this:

I am trying to get a letter of recommendation from one of my accounting professors (who is also the dean of my school's Business School) for an application to a student based consulting group at my school and I am wondering if I would be able to use the same letter for a different type of application (i.e. one to a Big 4, assuming they would take letters of rec. or one of their summer leadership programs).

I am pretty likely to get this letter (4.0 in class and T.A. is writing to him also) so I wanted to know if you guys think it is OK or common practice to use a letter for something it wasn't originally meant for.

I am asking just because I if it is NOT ok to use it for more than one thing, then I might be better off just asking for a personal reference or character reference or personal letter of rec.

OR

If I should just straight up ask for a personal letter that isn't tailored to a specific application instead of asking for a specific one.

Basically, I want to know what the best type of letter is to ask for from the Dean of my school's business school.

Thanks in advance!!!!
