I am a Junior and want to apply to some American universities along with the Canadian ones.

While lurking on the chancing threads, I cannot help but notice that the honors , awards, and scholarships that these applicants have on their resumes are all exclusively American.

1)For things like the National Merit Scholarship, National Merit Society and such, what are the Canadian equivalents?
2)Are there any that are uniquely Canadian?
3)what are the US student honors, awards, or scholarships that are also open to Canadian students?

There isn’t really a Canadian equivalent that I can think of, for National Merit, etc since I think those are based on SAT/PSAT scores (unless I’ve got them mixed up with another award…)

In terms of Canadian awards, there’s all those math contests that come out of UWaterloo (Euclid, Canadian Open, etc) There’s science contests (National Biology, Chem Olympiad, etc) There might also be some provincial awards, depending on where you’re at.

For scholarships, majority of the big Canadian ones are limited to Canadian schools. They include Loran, Millenium, TD, and Terry Fox. Some of the smaller scholarships let you take them south though (I think Wendy’s does, and Rutherford if you’re in Alberta)

NSERC is roughly the equivalent of the National Science Foundation.

If you’re in science and have good grades, make sure to apply for an Undergraduate Student Research Award during the summer after your sophomore year. It will give you research experience for graduate school. The U.S. equivalent is the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.
