Canadian Studying in the US - Cellphone?

If you have paypal I would strongly suggest you go to callingmart.com and buy your pins through them. Very convenient and easy. Again though I would set this up before you leave because they have a slight procedure to guarantee you are who you say you are. Paylpal is the same in that wnt you to have a verified account that you can use.

Any more question feel free to let me know and I will help out anyway I can. It is a transition moving to the States with no American credit and working through the red tape.

Thanks again PD,
Whats the least expensive way to transfer funds down south and free of any fees?
Currently I set up an account across the line and have just be depositing money to her US account. A pain !!

There is virtually no way to avoid the fees. Not sure where your D is but find out if there is a TD bank there. My D’s BF is in NYC and has a TD account down there and they can transfer money to his account at with no problems. Where is what we have done is opened a US funds account with her in Canada and we deposit to it and she writes herself a cheque and deposits it into her US account. That has been the biggest the hassle. Good luck

Thanks unfortunately no TD’s on the West Coast.

what about the reverse? My US Daughter will be going to mcGill up in canada… do we still get 2 phones, a CDN phone and she keeps her US/Verizon phone? Any cheaper way of doing things? Which CDN plan is the best with smart phone, unlimited…?

And then a similar question regarding laptop computers - if we purchase in the US, is the warranty valid up in Canada?

rickykur, unfortunately you are completely out of luck when it comes to cell phones. You will need to get a Canadian Phone. My D is also going to McGill for her masters and and I would suggest you look up VIDEOTRON.com and see if they have any plans. Again she will not be able to call the States without incuring long distance charges so I would strongly suggest that you into the pennytalk calling card as well. the number is an 800 number and becomes local whether she is in the States or in Canada and will not cost her anything except cell plan minutes and the pennytalk cost to call back to the States. Let me know in a PM if you are interested in the pennytalk because if I refer people we get extra on our plan for free.

As far the warranty. When I bought my D her laptop when it all depends if the store or manufacturer issued an international warranty, when I bought D her laptop, IPOD and tablet I made sure it was international so that she could go to a local shop if needed. Good luck to you and your D in Montreal, it is a beautiful city and will be great experience.
