cancer patient (in the past)

hi everyone I'm new here but wondering if anyone can help me out

so I found out I had skin cancer the summer before my freshman year and it was a traumatic experience for me and you can tell from my grades that something was off that year

my family and I kept the news to ourselves for the most part it wasn't blown up at school or anything only my closest friends know about it.

anyway I'm wondering what is the ideal way to convey this in my college applications? would it suffice to talk about it in my essay and explain how it shaped my world and my character and how it brought me to where I am today? does someone need to write a letter, like a doctor explaining my cancer (that seems a little extreme but i don't know) ?

sorry this is really strange for me to ask about but if anyone needs more specifics just ask and I can maybe answer

Most apps have a section for “unusual circumstances”. That would be one way to convey this to them.

You could also write an essay. The essay wouldnt be as much to explain your grade issues as it would to convey how your illness effected you personally. If you say it was traumatic, then yes I think this would make a good topic.

You dont need a letter from a doctor.
