Hello everyone,
I am an international student and I wish to apply in a high ranked Ivy League for ED this November. I wish to major in Biomed engineering. My two top choices are, Columbia and Cornell. I like Columbia better, for its Biomed engineering dept. But it might be a bit too high a reach for me. Well, Cornell would be high too, but chances may be slightly better. I like it too, but Cornell offers BEE ( Biological and environmental engineering) in undergrad though its grad school is famous for BME. Which one should I go for?

P.S. I will apply for RD as well, but, I want to use the ED to my full advantage.

No one can answer this for you! Not only do we not know a single things about you and your academic and extracurricular achievements but even if we did, we are not you and do not know how you would feel at either setting since they are vastly different. Columbia, as you know, is in an urban setting and Cornell couldn’t be more rural. All we can say is that you would receive a great education at either institution if you were fortunate enough to get in.

You place too much emphasis on the title of the major: Biomed Engineering vs BEE. No employer is going to care about the title, per se. I’m sure if you investigated the requirements of each colleges’ major, you’d see a great number of similar classes. I’m sure whatever you’d hope to do with a BME degree from Columbia, you could do the exact thing with a BEE (or whatever the equivalent is to BME) degree from Cornell. They are “titles” – the classes and what you derive from them have flexibility and all depend on you once you’re there.

Thank you so much. I think I have taken my decision. I have satisfactory academics and ECAs, yet I believe both colleges are well above my reach. Still, I will be trying in one of the two. Pray for me and wish me luck!
