How am I supposed to get my tax return electronically if my parents cannot verify their identity to the IRS. They do not have credit cards, our house is payed for and we never had to get auto loans or anything of that sort. All we have are their social security numbers.
No you can jot send 2014 information. You must file fafsa CSS profile and all other functions nancisl aid forms using 2015 income and current assets. If you send the wrong information your financial aid will not be processed
Are your parents us citizens or permanent residents
Are you a us citizen or permanent resident
Do your parents work? If yes, they should be filing taxes and you will have to submit proof of income and filing for financial aid. If your parents are citizens permanent residents anywhere in the world they will need to file their taxes in order for you to receive aid
I’m confused by your question. What is it your trying to do? Are you using the DRT to download the tax info into the FAFSA? You don’t need any of the things you mentioned. IIRC (havn’t done this year’s yet), you just need their name, SSN and address.
Why would you need any of those things (credit card, house payments or other loans) to get your tax records?! It sounds like you are trying to get a credit report. You don’t need that for FA.
@sybbie719 Thanks bunches. I have finished both CSS and FAFSA with estimates and selected that my parents"Will File" for 2015 within the next month or so. They said I have to update the information once filed, but I am having issues deciding what they want me to send to my ranked colleges since I do not have a 2015 tax return.
@sybbie719 They are both U.S. citizens who work, but the last time they filed was for 2014. I am not sure how to provide proof of income and filing.
@ClaremontMom On the IRS’ website I have been trying to get transcripts of my family’s latest tax returns. I’m not sure if I’m making the correct steps.
Each school will tell you what their requirement is for providing proof of income and tax filing. Follow the instructions provided by each school.
The instructions on the IRS website for getting a tax transcript are pretty clear. If you are unable to get an online tax transcript, order a transcript by mail; the website says it will only take 5 to 10 calendar days. All you need is SSN, date of birth and mailing address from the latest tax return.
@BelknapPoint I only ranked one school and it wants a tax return for 2015, but my parents have not filed for 2015 yet.
First, why didn’t they file in 2015? You need to fill out the FAFSA with 2015 data. I think you are going to have an issue here.
Second, you probably don’t need a transcript. You should be able to download the tax info into the FAFSA using the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT). There are occasions when a school will want a transcript but usually this is enough.
Finally, assuming you really do need a transcript, I see that to get a transcript online you need one of those pieces of information you mentioned. This is probably to make sure you say who you say you are. Since you don’t have any of that choose the Transcript by Mail option. There you only need to have SSN, DOB and the mailing address (since it’s being sent to the address on file, they know it’s you and don’t need the additional info).
I am assuming all these questions are because you are filling out the FAFSA…is there something else you are trying to do?
Well, you obviously can’t give the school something that doesn’t exist. Even the late filing deadline for 2015 returns has gone by now. Are your parents required to file a 2015 tax return? If so, they obviously need to do it ASAP, for a number of reasons.
@ClaremontMom I am not sure why they did not file yet, but I already filled out my fafsa with estimates my parents gave me and 2014 information. Right now, the college I ranked wants a copy of W-2 forms and the 2015 tax return that I do not have.
I think you need to talk to the school. They changed FAFSA to use prior-prior year to avoid this very situation (not having filed taxes yet). I don’t understand why/how your parents don’t have their 2015 taxes done. Like BelknapPoint said, deadlines have passed for that.
Ask them when they will file their past due 1040 tax return and pay all associated tax, penalties, interest, if any.
You can’t expect to get federal financial aid/loans for 2016-2017 and/or 2017-2018 if your parents are required to but don’t file a 2015 tax return and pay any amounts due.
You need to sit down tonight and speak with your parents or you are going to have a problem. Your parents needs to file their 2015 tax information ASAP.
It will take approximately 2 weeks after filing to be able to use the IRS data retrieval tool.
Do your parents own their own business?
You will not get a correct financial aid package without your tax information.
Even if you should get an estimated package, you will be flagged for verification and no actual money will be disbursed until you complete the process.
For my listed schools, I am supposed to send W-2 forms and my 2015 tax returns. However, neither of my parents have filed for 2015 yet. Can I send 2014 returns and W-2s from my most recent year? I’ve been looking forever and emailing different help centers, but I cannot seem to get a reply or find and answer.
I don’t think getting the “latest” tax returns that your parents filed will help you if they last filed in 2014. Financial aid for the 2017-18 school year is based on the 2015 taxes.
Is this for Questbridge? If your parents were required to file taxes and didn’t, your financial aid application won’t be processed and you won’t get any aid.
^^I don’t believe it’s still possible to electronically file a calendar year 2015 Form 1040. If the return has to be paper-filed, it’s going to take more than two weeks to be processed. It takes 2-3 weeks after the return has been processed (and amounts paid in full?) for IRS DRT to be available.
@Madison85 @sybbie719 They do not own their business and they told me that they are planning to file within the next month or so. My application material is due on Tuesday for Questbridge National College Match Finalists. So, I guess I’m just SOL?? Nearly 13 years of hard work to have my dreams flushed down the toilet
