All adults have “common sense”?? Hysterical. My wife deals with the adult public daily. She feels at least half of them have a hard time executing simple life tasks.

MiamiDAP writes: “One more point is that every school has Merit awards”

Really?

"MiamiDAP writes: “One more point is that every school has Merit awards”

Really? "
-Yes, really. Some would have 50 awards and the others will have 5000 awards and more. Specifically, my kid had about 10 different Merit scholarships (did not apply to any) that her college awarded to cover her tuition. The other state public schools did not give her near as much and some gave her so little that we did not consider it at all. Again, one private gave her more than that in dollar amounts which would leave a balance of $5k for us to pay. There were not a single UG that did not give her something, including OOS state public.
One just got to research. How some stranger would know what kind of Merit award your kid would receive at any school, public or private, IS or OOS. And absolutely no single person out there and most likely including you (a parent) would guess which school your kid will fall in love with and which one will be crossed from the list after the first visit. The last one is more important than financial. Time is a huge investment, it is not less important resource than money.
Blantly saying in general terms go to school A and under no circumstances go to school B and school C is superior to school D is shallow and will backfire unless you get lucky. Listenning to a stranger who is giving this advice to unknown crowd of strangers is simply very risky proposition.

What merit money (academic merit) do the ivys offer, miami?
If you are suggesting that posters should not listen to advice from strangers such as yourself, thats probably not something you need to worry about.

MiamiDAP- Once again you are incorrect. There are a number of schools that do not give merit awards. Also, isn’t it time you moved on from the constant bragging about your daughter? My God. She’s well into medical school now. We get it. She’s a superstar. Move on! Go inhale some chlorine and have a donut!

Maimi, we really don’t want to argue this. We learn nothing from the fact that, for YOUR D “There were not a single UG that did not give her something, including OOS state public.” Your assumptions run the risk of misinforming others.

All I am saying, search and you will find the school that both match your kid and gives out good number of Merit awards. LIsten to others is a waste of time (including lisntenning to me, I agree about this).

…btw, D’s experience of getting Merits at every school was based on the fact that she DID NOT apply to the ones that would not give her Merit award. As simple as that. Her list was a result of our personal search without any input. If we listened to others, then she would have a whole lot of schools that would accept her without any Merit.
Again, you should not be listenning to anybody. Our goal was not to pay for UG, so D. did not apply to the places that would not offer Merit. Others maight have a goal of paying as much as UG cost. So, they will end up paying. It depends on a goal. However, it is not a Dave’s goal, it is not my goal, it is your family goal.

Momofwildchild, relax, take it easy. I love hearing about MiamiDap’s D and I am so happy that she is proud of her. It reminds me to be proud of my children too. Let’s all relax.

So who put you in charge of the thread, frugaldoctor? I’ll relax when I choose, thank you, and I will point out other posters’ foolishness when I choose, as well.

LOL, that made my day!! LOL!

MiamiDAP: Didn’t you twice say that EVERY college has merit aid?
Are you backtracking now, without acknowledging your erroneous “advice” ?

Well, there is a bragging thread where one can go to read about others’ fabulous children to their heart’s content. ;)

"MiamiDAP: Didn’t you twice say that EVERY college has merit aid?
Are you backtracking now, without acknowledging your erroneous “advice” ? "
-Nope, here is a 3rd time: every college has a Merit aid. This is not any advice. My advice (which you did not read) was to research which one will give YOUR child the Merit aid. Again, this advice is ONLY for those who are seeking any FA. There is a good number who do not care if they pay a full price. apparently it will not be applicable to them. We are in this situation currently. We told our D. NOT to consider a price tag. We have chosen to pay a full price and we are doing it.

Merit aid is NOT the same as financial aid. Please stop giving out erroneous information.
I some cases, if a school really wants a student for whatever reason, say they need a new bassoon player for their orchestra, they may discount the tuition by calling it “merit aid” or what have you, to attract the student. But to say that ALL schools offer merit aid is simply incorrect. It would be most unfortunate if posters or lurkers on cc were to accept that as accurate when it is patently incorrect. Please stop.

And here, are you talking about Med school? That is a different scenario. Again, without clarity it may confuse readers.

every college has a Merit aid
NOPE.

*Again, this advice is ONLY for those who are seeking any FA. *
NOPE. Merit is generally not about financial need. It’s an award- regardless of whether you need financial aid or not- at least partly based on some criteria other than need.

None of the schools mine applied to offered Merit.

^Your comment have nothing to do with mine. You are not any close to them at all. I am saying, that if anybody is NOT concerned with FA, then why in a world they consider only colleges that would give a kid Merit. I am also saying that not all colleges would give your kid a Merit award, while all are having them.
And, yes, FA is FA, there is need based and Merit based, but all are done by the same department, FA departement.
So, you are saying with 100% degree of certianty that the schools that you kid applied did not offer Merit to a single student, not one, zero students received Merit at all schools that your child applied? I have never heard of such situation.

No. There are many, many schools where merit aid is awarded by the admissions office without any input whatsoever from the financial aid office.

Any school that a) awards merit aid and b) does not require the FAFSA or PROFILE to be considered for merit aid is a school where merit aid =/= need-based aid.

WRONG AGAIN Admissions handles merit awards, the FA office handles FA awards. PLEASE STOP.

** cross-posted with slithey

Miami- zero students receive merit aid at Yale. Zero students receive merit aid at Princeton. Etc. And many universities award merit aid without regard for financial need and DO NOT involve the financial aid department in those decisions.

We know you are an expert on med school admissions. Please check your facts on statements which might mislead other posters, based on how convinced you are of your own experience being universal.
