What is the FAFSA EFC?
<<< @cloudysmom
She has but they are still more than we can do w/ out FASFA so hope at least we get something decent from FASFA. I>>>
Do you have a very low EFC …such as below 5000?
What is your EFC?
How much can you pay each year? Getting costs down to “instate” can be great if you can pay the equivalent instate rate.
I’m not sure you realize that FAFSA is an app for fed aid, and “free money” from the Feds is not much and only for those with very low EFCs.
If your EFC is 0, then the most you’d get is a grant for about 5700.
If your EFC is about 2500, then you’d get something around $3000
If your EFC is about 6000, then you’d get NO free money from Feds.
Your child will be given a $5500 loan from Feds.
A CSS Profile school ONLY uses FAFSA to see what fed aid you qualify for. They don’t use FAFSA to determine their grants and aid.
A CSS school is not going to say, “well, dad didn’t fill out NCP, so we’re just going to use the FAFSA EFC results and give her some of our money for need based aid.” no. They’ll just use FAFSA to see what your EFC is and if it’s low enough, give the appropriate Pell Grant and then a student loan and maybe some work study.
Please realize that there are MILLIONS of kids with perfect GPAs that don’t get to go where they want due to finances. They still end up leading successful lives.
Both of my kids had 4.7 GPAs, each had very high test scores, yet they went to a state flagship on nearly free rides. One has a successful career, and the other one is graduating from med school this May. They both love their undergrad.
My kids aren’t unique. There are many kids attending their former undergrad on huge merit because their families either didnt’ get enough aid or have unaffordable EFCs or want to save money to use towards grad/med/law school.

I see that your DD has an ACT 29, that’s quite good, and I hope she applied to some schools that will give her generous.
Much will really depend on how much you can pay. If you can’t pay much, then she may need to add in a couple schools that will give HUGE merit for an ACT 29
Even if your exH had filled out CSS NCP info, if he has a decent income but won’t pay, your DD would still be screwed.
When you divorced, did you ask that he must help pay for college?
Does he owe back child support? If so, go after that to help pay for college.

These deadbeat dads<<<<
[/QUOTE]
This is not a deadbeat dad, this is a thread about the mother’s new husband who is not related to the OP at all outside of his mother’s remarriage. This is a problem of the choice of the mother. Her new husband has zero obligation in this scenario. As OPs mum is not in a position to access her own married filing jointly tax returns, one would question her role in this scenario. Plenty of married custodial parents don’t dig deep to pay for college.
We don’t know that OP’s mother and step-father filed a joint return. OP hasn’t been back to clarify that. It could very well be that the couple filed separately, and the step-father is refusing access to his return.
That does not make him a deadbeat dad though LOL. The issue here is with the bio mum and her relationship with her new husband, not anyone’s dad, that was the statement I was replying. Only she can address this situation.
I would say that the issue here is the relationship between all three of them. And I agree, that fact that step-dad is being uncooperative in this matter does not make him a deadbeat dad.
