I am thinking of either CSU Fresno or Eastern Washington University for Comp Sci. I eventually want to go to a UC grad school (UCSD, UCB, or UCI probably), but I'm not sure which is a better program overall to get me to that goal (granted that I get good grades and whatnot).

My biggest "issue" (so to speak) is that EWU is ABET accredited, but Fresno is more well known for its engineering/sciences, and is known to the UC system-- for the lack of a better word-- more known than EWU because it is in Cali, and a State school. Help!

I have never heard of EWU. My suggestion is that if you want to attend a college right away and want to definitely stay in Cali, I think CSU Fresno would be a good choice. I was accepted there a few months ago for math.

Honestly, compare the costs and weight your options. All that’s really going to matter is your performance. Still, I honestly think you should’ve applied to Cal Poly Pomona (I don’t know if you did or not, though). Graduate schools will be more receptive to places they’ve heard of but if the applicant comes from an accredited institution no matter what state and they’ve got the grades, they’re going to be looked at equally as much as you are. Maybe they’d look at you slightly more because you’re from in-state, but you must outdo your competition since you’re competing with people from all over. Being in-state only gives you a SLIGHT edge.

However, CSU Fresno was my last pick of schools. I don’t think they carry that great of a reputation among the CSU’s. I know looking at their admissions statistics they have trouble getting people to attend and people actually applied less there this year than last year.

My honest opinion is that if you attend a California community college and provided you do not screw up, you have a good shot at getting into top UC’s. It is basically a second chance and they give you high priority when admitting students. You can also find some campuses that do an honors program that helps you get priority admission into the universities you’d like. At my school, we have an agreement with UCLA and UCI. You can also do a TAG for most UC’s, which means Transfer Admission Guarantee. There is a lot of opportunity to be had coming from a community college and then transferring. It would be notably easier to go from a UC from undergrad to a UC for graduate school, I would think.

I think the CSU system iss tiered into four: (based on opinion)

*Top tier:
- Cal Poly SLO
- Cal Poly Pomona
- San Diego State

*Tier-2:
4. Long Beach State
5. Chico State
6. Cal State Fullerton
7. Humboldt State
8. Sonoma State

*Tier-3:
9. San Jose State
10. Fresno State
11. Cal Maritime

Tier-4
12. Monterrey Bay
13. Stanislaus
14. San Francisco
15. Sacramento
16. San Bernardino
17. Northridge
18. San Marcos
19. Los Angeles
20. East Bay
21. Dominguez Hills
22. Bakersfield
23. Channel Islands

If you position yourself well at Fresno and stand out as a big fish in a small pond, I think you’ll have as good as a chance as anybody else.

Go to the school you want to go to. You’ll still be considered a California resident for grad school (assuming that’s where you’re from) and assuming you do very well in undergrad, you’ll be a competitive candidate for a UC grad school. . . especially coming from an ABET program.
