I'm still trying to decide my path and would appreciate any advice. What would be the best academic fit?

Major: Computer Science

Texas Tech - Honors program and College of Engineering

Could possibly add engineering major.
Benefites of Honors college, (early registration, small classes, great dorm, community, etc)
CS maybe not as competitivie so could be in upper top of class.
CS building is small, doesn't look like any improvements to be made.
Small number of faculty (good and bad) Will get to know profs better but not as prestigious.
Great social community base with smaller school, CS department and Honors college.
Lubbock - ugly but has everything I need.

UTSA/UT Austin -

Will probably never have opportunity to get in Engineering.
After going through CAP at UTSA and taking basic CS classes,
will be admitted to CS department as a junior.
Huge selection of classes to take!!
Very competitive but great program so maybe in middle of class.
New builiding on campus, obviously putting money into program.
Large faculty and profs graduating from very highly regarded schools.
Don't want to be just a number.
Austin!

I am leaning toward Texas Tech but keep having reservations due to Computer Science Department being very highly ranked at UT. Just have to figure out if that really matters! What do you think?

You are guaranteed admission to the CS program (College of Natural Sciences) at UT upon completing the CAP program… I fail to see what the problem is.

Borb: actually, guaranteed college of natural sciences. might get into entry-level CS. Might not get into CS. OP should CALL the CS advisors and ask.

Yes, you are right eaglemom10. There are 3 CS entry level classes required before you are considered a CS major. I would be a junior when I apply to the CS major.

cat2fat - Straight up Tech Honors College vs. UTSA/UT, go with Tech Honors hands-down. As you noted, you will be treated “special” at Tech versus one of the crowd in UTSA/UT Austn. Consider PMing a recent Tech Business graduate, kbfunkeymonkey, who had UTSA or UTA/UTAustin versus Tech choice and went with Tech (not the Honors College). He gives excellent practical advice including pros and cons on Tech and Lubbock (though on balance he’s a Tech Booster for sure).

On the Computer Science end, I think you are correct in saying you would have a better shot at a higher ranking in che Class at Tech. However, your other points about the greater depth of Computer Science offerings at UT is certainly a factor too.

My son graduated from Tech’s Honors College 2.5 years ago and had a tremendous experience there. He is a Business graduate now working for a Fortune 500 Oil Field Services Company. A staff person at the Honors College knew a recruiting person at his company which ended up getting him the position. I am a huge Tech booster though I went to another university myself.

After all is said and done, go with yout gut instincts but I hope they take you to Tech.

Thanks lonestardad! I have read all the great things you have said about the TT Honors college. I appreciate your advice!

I am leaning towards Texas Tech. The benefits of the Honors college, taking classes in my major right away and the possibility of adding an engineering major is really important to me. I also like the idea of starting at a school my freshman year and creating a community of friends that I don’t have to leave after a year as I would with UTSA.
