Car for Out-Of-State student - How to handle Registration and Insurance?

I had similar experience as thumper1. We lived in NJ and D1 was going to a school in NY. Her residency was NJ and she also had her license from NJ. I had Liberty Mutual insurance at that time. They told me they could cover D1 driving my car in NY. I didn’t have to do much. It appears it may different at other states. I think the best thing to do is to call your insurance company.

Watch that residency thing. Many students at this time of year vote where they are at school. THAT is a declaration that you are changing your residency. They can, of course, change it back but need to do something to make that declaration.

Do I think anyone would push that issue? No, except jury duty people.

Some states have some weird laws just for OOS students - for example - The Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Law requires out-of-state students bringing vehicles into the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to file a nonresident driver statement with the local police department in the city in which their university is located.

Also in MA, doesn’t matter if you are not a MA resident (voting, drivers license, etc. all OOS), you are still required to do jury duty (something which surprises many students).

My D lived and went to school in Florida for several years. Her first car was ours and we kept it registered to us and insured by us in our home state. She sold that car and when buying a new one in Florida she could not register it in our home state. She titled the car in her name, registered it in Florida and insured it in Florida. She was able to keep her home state drivers license.
