Career Talk- Psychiatry

Hello, lately I've been bouncing around on career ideas and became focused on psychiatry.

I had a couple of awesome PMs with lizschup (thank you, thank you!) about advertising, and was wondering if there were any parents out there who could talk to me about psychiatry, or could point me in a good direction. I would really appreciate it, thanks a lot.

Also, I'm wavering between advertising, psychiatry/psychology, journalism. If anyone could give insight on a comparison of them, that'd be spiff.

FYI, I'm accepted at University of Maryland- College Park, Syracuse University, Northeastern University, and Clark University.

To become a psychiatrist, you need to finish medical school first. It is a very long road.

...I understand. I'm willing. And I'm actually one of those "with a rich uncle" persons.

:) Thanks for the reply.

i'd be happy to talk to you. i'm a psychiatrist in private practice. send me a private message eith your questions and i'll reply

Thank you!! PM sent. :)

bumps up since rmom hasn't replied

I went to Syracuse for two years - it was a wonderful place to be (tons of stuff to do on campus, even more than much bigger schools) but I was in the humanities and know nothing about the sciences there. If pre-med is your goal (step 1 to becoming a shrink), practically speaking, it is probably important for you to find out: (a) which school has the best placement record for medical school (b) what research or medical internships they have and (c) where are you likely to get the highest GPA? (that is, avoid grade deflation like the plague).

Bear in mind (for the future) that there seems to be more money available for students in MD/PhD programs than for straight MD programs.
