Hey, I am deciding for RD between Carleton and Colgate for match schools but I wanted to know if you guys know on how competitive each school is for gaining admission.

Carleton is considered more difficult, but it really depends on what you bring to the school. If one orchestra needs an oboe player this year, and you happen to be first chair in your regional symphony...Also, geographic factors come into play since private schools seek geographic diversity. Most apps to Colgate are from the NE, and most apps to Carleton are from the midwest.

fwiw:

these two schools have a totally different culture, and I would not perceive the same student thriving at both.

USNEWS data:
Colgage, overall acceptance rate 33%, SAT's - 1270-1430; mean gpa 3.6; btw: Colgate has a ~60% acceptance rate ED, so RD is considerably lower than 33%; top 10% of class = 73%

Carleton, overall accpetance rate = 29%, SAT's - 1300-1480; top 10% of class = 73%; ED acceptance = 41%

I guess for RD, by the way, Im Asian so I was wondering if it plays any sort of diversity factor with these colleges...

thanks

On other threads you have indicated that you have already been accepted EA at Notre Dame and Georgetown; if that is the case you really already have two very good schools in hand. It isn't quite clear why you would also want to pursue Carleton and/or Colgate, since they are each quite different from each other and from the two chools to which you already are accepted. Rather than posting queries about degree of selectivity or perceived superiority you might do better to think about what kind of school would suit you best in terms of size, location, academic offerings, and general campus culture. All the schools you've been posting about in various forums are fine schools but they are not interchangable and you probably should research them in ways that go beyond which is "better."

Well, I already have my top choices mattmom. I did not intend to come off the impression that I am randomnly selecting schools but rather about the idea that 1.) I do not receive my financial aid packages until next May and thus I wish to apply to another match school just in case anything happens 2.) Thus, in my choice between Carleton and Colgate, I would also be interested in attending a small liberal arts type of college and thus I wanted peoples' opinions on these schools.

Thanks.

I would suggest Carleton. It is a small LOC that is regularly ranked #1 for its teaching. It is an intellectual type of environment.

Colgate acceptance rate was 27% for current freshman class. I'm not sure how the relative selectivity would help your decision. They are both excellent schools - but I would guess there isn't a lot of overlap in applications for these two schools.
