can someone give me info on CMU’s MT program? I’m trying to compare programs.

thanks!

I'm sure there are many people on this forum who would like to help you, but you need to do a little homework too. Have you checked out CMU's website? You can find out about their curriculum there. You'll see that virtually all of the coursework is in the MT major. MT is considered to be a double major at CMU. You will take the same drama curriculum as the acting majors plus voice and dance classes.

In order to compare MT programs, I'd suggest 1st looking at the curricula for the schools you are interested in. It is very instructive to see exactly what you will study in each program. Ask yourself what your own strengths and weaknesses are. Do you want a program that plays to your strengths or one that will help you improve in your weak areas? Of course, all MT programs should help you to improve your weak areas, but I think that some , because of their particular emphasis, may be more helpful than others. For example, if you feel that your singing is your strongest area, do you want to attend a school that offers a BM in MT, which will emphasize music more than acting, or do you want to attend a program that is strongly acting based (like CMU) to beef up your acting skills?

If you have specific questions about CMU, or any other program, there are many people who would be happy to answer. What do you really want to know?

I am going to step out on a limb and suggest that you investigate the MT programs at Florida State and the University of Miami. Both schools have excellent MT programs and, since you would be an in-state student, you could save a lot of money.

I see you also posted the same question in the CCM, OCU, and UM forums. As I said above, you need to do a little homework for yourself. People here are very generous with their time and advice, however, we generally won't do all your work for you. You need to go to each school's website and look for the curriculum guide for the MT degree program. Print out the curricula for each of the 4 schools you have asked about. After you have done a little homework you will be able to ask intelligent questions - things like how many students are accepted each year, does the school have a cut policy, does the school offer triple threat training or does it emphasize one of the 3 MT disciplines more than the other? Also, taking the time to read through the College Confidential MT forum, though time consuming, would be well worth your time. There is a wealth of information here. I bet that virtually any question you could possibly have asked about the 4 schools you've expressed an interest in has been answered here.

oh. i have done ALL my homework on ALL the schools I posted on.

I guess I'm looking for a personal account or someone with a son or daughter that is or has studied at one of these schools.

& also. I have read quite a bit on these forums. I'm just trying to find a personal account. there is one on the FSU forum about a parent's daughter.

I go to a performing arts school so i know all about the most of it... but everyone ends up going into theatre, not musical theatre.

I'm taking vocal lessons, and i've taken around 8 years of dance. (but i've stopped for now) & I'm kind of looking for a school that can beef up my acting but still play at my strengths.

so.

I'm the parent with the D at FSU, so I obviously do not mind giving personal accounts.

Theatermom has a D at U.M. as does Gkoukla.

There are several posters on the OCU forum who go to the school.

I know there is a poster who is a theater teacher whose son attends CMU - sorry I'm blanking on the name. I'm embarassed to forget it. :(

Keep reading. You may find exactly the info you are looking for.

I am guessing that you feel that singing and dancing are your greatest strengths. Since you want to beef up your acting, you may not want to attend a program that has a music emphasis. Most of the schools that emphasize music offer the BM in MT. OCU would be a school that emphasizes music. CCM and UM are more triple threat programs. CMU is an acting based program that is a little weak in dance for those students who have extensive dance backgrounds.

All four of the schools that you are looking at are well regarded. Do you have other programs on your list? Most of us suggest auditioning for 8 to 9 schools. A mix of MT "ivies" such as the 4 schools you are considering, plus some programs that might not be quite so tough to get into, and a non-audition safety school are suggested.

Well... my list consists of

CCM

FSU

UM

OKCU

CMU

but, i guess i've never thought of others.

i think i want to go to a more well rounded triple threat school. although i want to beef up my acting skills, (which at this moment, all we know is that i have potential) i have a huge love of music. and CMU, eek, if it's weak in dance....

well i have a while.. i'm just one of those crazy planners.

My advice to you is to absolutely try for your list of dream schools but to realize these are all HIGHLY competitive. No matter how much you want them, realize that the choice may not be yours. All of them are so hard to get into, that even getting into one or two of them would be a long shot, no matter how talented you are. I do not mean to be cruel, but I'm stating the reality of the situation. You may need to broaden your list to include some non-audition or less competitive programs. I think all of your list of schools would be the very top tier.

Start reading this forum, and read all the way back. It's the best way to learn about the schools. Good luck!

i understand what your saying and totally agree.

but even the most talented people?

hmm. well.. i guess i'll have to see what all happens.

There may be the rare person who gets accepted into all the top programs, but it hardly ever happens. SoozieVT has explained this very well in the past, if you'll read the treads. There are many very talented people who may get into one program and not another. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason why a person is accepted into one program and not another. The other thing is, there is much competition out there. It is great to believe you are the most talented of people, and do keep up your self-confidence! I just wanted you to be aware that many people out there are very talented.

It is good to compare programs going into this and try to determine what you are looking for, but I'm just advising you to then audition broadly - try to find many schools you like and could be happy attending.

Hi, I am a senior at CMU in the music theatre program. Coming out of CMU you're going to to be a strong actor who can sing and dance. A lot of the MT grads go on to do not only musical theatre, but film and television as well. We take 4 years of ballet, 3 years of jazz, and three years of tap. We take four years of acting and 4 years of voice and speech in addition to MANY other classes and crew. We take many classes with the actors which is great because we are held to the same standard they are and it is great to mix it up. It is a fantastic yet grueling program and I am glad I have spent four years there. In three weeks I am going with my class to NYC for our east coast showcase and in May we go to LA for the west coast showcase. Last year everyone was signed to an agent from these showcases, with many of them getting jobs. We'll see what happens this year! Please let me know if you have any specific quesions!

Johanna, it is great that you have taken the time to come onto this forum so that prospective students can talk to someone actually IN the program. I appreciate that on their behalf. I also want to wish you "break a leg" at your upcoming showcase and I'm sure you are on your way to a very bright future. Hope to see you on stage some day. And congrats for making it this far in an intensive college program.
Susan

Susan,
It is my pleasure. I wish I could have talked to more current students in the music theatre programs that I was looking years ago. I hope I can be of some help to all the students auditioning out there. . .anything to make this crazy process easier!

CMU Johanna was a GREAT Hope in URINETOWN this past semester....we are lucky to have her here!

CoachC (fellow Pittsburgher, teacher of LOTS of people you know, Johanna, but don't think I've ever met you directly! :) )

Thank you CoachC! I'm glad you liked the show, it was one of the best experiences I have had at CMU. Are you a private voice coach in the area?
