Hey, i'm a junior and have just started looking at the applications of schools. One of the main things i was looking for was the essay requirement. Most schools say the essay should be 250-500 words, but carnegie just says a one-page essay. Does anyone know if this is double spaced or not? B/c single spaced would be much longer than 500 words.

im 80% sure it's double spaced. (i accidently did single and had to crop alot of my essays down b/c of character limit)

Mine was about a page with space and a half... 462 words. Just an interesting note, Rice's essay said "take as much as you need to answer the prompt, most people use two or three pages." Only school I applied to to do that.

Yea, i saw that. My english teacher actually went to Rice, and we're going over college essays now. Thanks for the replies, i'll go with as much as i can fit on a page w/o exceeding 500 words.

Flyin, i didnt realize that CMU had an extra essay until 30minutes before the deadline. i just changed a bit of one of my cornell essasys which was 1 page double spaced and around 280 words. i got in, so i dont think the length of the essay is THAT big of a factor, as long as you submit something with substance.

^haha i changed around my cornell essay too

Just for future reference, the Carnegie Mellon Essay should be about a page either single or double spaced. The spacing and font size really doesn't matter (please just don't make it too big or too small). The most important part is to focus on your message, written expression and genuine interest. Good luck!
