Carnegie Mellon AP/EA course choices

I'm attending Carnegie Mellon's AP/EA program this summer, and trying to decide which classes to take. I think I want to take Intro to Data Structures and Intro to Electrical and Computer Engineering. I only got a 3 on the Comp Sci AB test, though, and I've also heard that Intro to ECE is very difficult. How hard are these classes? Also, my interests are mainly biology and computer science, with some interest in engineering; what other classes might be a good choice?

Hi,

Intro to ECE will be pretty easy at the beginning, as long as you know I=U/R things like that. It will go smoothly harder and harder. You’ll be fine.

I’m also going to take 15-121 for session one. It’s okay not suppose to be hard. It’s like basic Java with basic Data Structure.

I’m wondering this also (I’m planning on taking the same courses). I’m also a bit curious on the “recitation”, I have a basic idea, but what exactly is it?

@red12355:

hi,

recitation is like a review session for the lectures. It’s hold by TAs, i.e. graduate students or even undergrads.

Basically, if you are pretty clear about the lectures, you dont really need to go recitation. But you have to go if there’s quiz or hw due on recitation.

If you are taking 2 course in a session, it’s almost the workload of a regular CMU students. Be prepared!

Feel free to ask questions, I’m done with finals. Yay.

Thanks for the response.

I kinda have to take 2 courses because I’m going to stay there and those two are the only courses that really interest me. Are these courses concurrent? Is the work hard?

Where are you going to stay? Are you jurnior?

It depends on the professor. Presumeably, summer courses should be pretty easy and the professors will be really lenient.

However, a lot of freshman complain for such courses, saying they are too hard. I would say, if you are good at programming and electric physics, you can get free As.

Are you taking 121 in first session? If so we are going to be classmates.

I’m a junior (high school) so I’m going to be staying on campus or whatever “residential” means.

I’m probably going to take 121 (though not sure which session). I just got my acceptance letter today, so I still have to figure everything out.

I’ll see you guys there, then! But Choutly, what do you mean by “the first session”? As far as I can tell, there’s one six-week session and you take two courses for the duration (if you’re residential like me).

Choutiy, that is. Sorry for the misspelling.

Hey! I was just accepted into this program too! Hahaha I’m not sure what I’m going to take yet but I’m pretty sure one of them is going to be Physics for Engineering Students I and not sure about the other one maybe ECE…

Hey guys! I’m taking Introduction to Data Structures and er, whatever the second year of calculus is. I guess we’ll all have a class together, then! :)

Yep! I think it’ll be doable.
Ooh, another thing. I guess last year there was a huge cheating thing with a bunch of people taking computer science classes. Programs were being shared. All of the people involved got sent home. I heard that this year they’ll really be looking out for that.
