Hi
I recently heard that Carnegie Mellon is one of the few colleges that doesn’t take a “holistic” approach to education. I heard that it is a school that makes you very good at what you major it, but is not going to help you in most other aspects of life. To what extent is this true? Obviously, I mean subjectively, not objectively.
For most colleges, you choose a selection of courses to fulfill your degree requirements, which include your major, your general education, and free electives. So it is not really “holistic”. CMU is not particularly unusual in this respect.
If you mean colleges that allow you to avoid or minimize general education, you may be looking for colleges like Brown, Amherst, and Evergreen State.
