Does anyone know how many types of interviews there are? From somewhere I read that there is one just for applicants/parents to ask questions and then there was the one towards the end of the year use for admissions. What is the admissions interview like (what kinds of questions do they ask, how long, etc.)
There is no general “one towards the end of the year use for admissions.” But, certain schools, such as the School of Design and School of Art, conduct portfolio reviews and on-campus interviews that do contribute to admission. For fairness sake, I can’t discuss what questions are asked during those. These interviews are about 6 to 10 minutes in duration, so pretty short.
Thanks for your reply! Can you provide some tips for someone planning on applying ED for engineering? Also, do you think I would have a little advantage over others for being a first generation Asian student, or be at a disadvantage for being an Asian student since they aren’t URMs at Carnegie Mellon?
@jyinsanity and @spadeillusion may be able to give you some tips and pointers when applying to the College of Engineering. Hopefully they willl see this tag haha.
Treat your race and generation status separate in this case. You being an Asian won’t supplement your application too much, but you being a first-generation student definitely will. Add the two together and you get a positive benefit.
Does everybody who interviews at CMU receive a letter afterward from admissions telling them that they hope they will “seriously consider CMU” when they are choosing schools to apply to? Or is that indicative of a good interview?
