Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

@bird: i didn’t apply early but i will apply regular decision.
@gotmilk: it costs about that much when you factor in souvenirs, extra food, clothes, and books(depending on what classes you get put in)…that’s about $50 a week. its definitely worth it though. and do drive if your from jersey…your parents can drop you off

This was seriously the best program ever (: I loved CMU Pre-College 2010 :D

Hmmmmm, any advice on getting accepted? I don’t have stellar grades, but I am self studying AP: Physics B, Calculus BC, Chemistry and self taught myself programming, albeit I’d like to apply to this program and make the most use of it and do an extra course (3 courses) anyone not recommend that? I was considering the SAMS but it just doesn’t seem rigorous enough. Someone tagged this is a spam post earlier, and I apologize for profanity, but can someone answer my questions?

from what i’ve read its completely random some people get in with like a 3.11 gpa and some get rejected with a 4.08 Gpa

I got accepted to AP/EA!!! I can’t wait to go!!!

Anyone still doing this?

Is no one doing this this year? Or is there another thread that I’ve managed to miss?

I’m applying.

Ooh, cool!

If you’re a rising junior, is the only program you can apply to (excluding pre-college) SAMS?
And also, do you know if they’re primarily looking for URMs? Can anyone who has gone tell us if most of the people in SAMS are an URM?

I’m a rising junior and I’ve read this entire thread(no life). It’s a lot of urm I believe, someone posted this in the thread before, but don’t let it discourage you. I’m nota urm, but I’m still going to apply. And I believe you can apply for however many, but again I’ve never went so if you really want to know, hope someone who has gone answers you.

URM = Under Represented Minority?
I’m Chinese, so def not underrepresented.
But I’m still a minority!
Two outta three ain’t bad!

They said on the site that they wanted to extend the pipeline dream or whatever.
Someone once told me that being a minority in college is the best thing ever. Until I realized that I’m not really a minority anymore. >_____________<

@ xGlassChild: Haha, same here! My mom told me Asians were a minority in the US… but not in college or any of these summer programs. Sigh.

What’s the pipeline dream?

@archaic
Are you still going to apply? We could be Asian buddies!

& directly from their website:
The College-Bound Pipeline

The limited number of outstanding college-bound high school graduates with diverse backgrounds is often referred to as the “pipeline” problem.

Simply stated, the objective of the Summer Programs for Diversity is to expand the pipeline by enrolling high school students who will grow educationally and personally, and therefore succeed in gaining admission to selective colleges and universities. To that end, we recruit, admit and enroll good students who can become excellent students when given access to educational opportunities at Carnegie Mellon.

The goal of the program is to encourage more students to pursue engineering, science, computer science and other math-based majors and to prepare them for admission to selective colleges and universities.

@ xGlassChild: Yes, I think I’ll still apply anyway (if my teachers are willing to write another recommendation, that is…) Asian buddies yay! x)

Anybody familiar with the design program? I’m dying to get in, and reading older posts has really scared me, as my stats and EC are pretty average (maybe slightly above), and Asians don’t really qualify as URM either.

Anybody know how selective this is? I’m considering applying for the SAMS one, but would rather get into the AP/EA one.

Bump10char

I want to get into the SAMS program so badly!!

Has anyone heard anything?

I’m pretty sure the website said that decisions will be sent out mid may. Theres still time.
