Question About Carnegie Mellon's Summer Program

Carnegie Mellon's Summer Program for Diversity looks very appealing to me, but i am not sure whether or not I am eligible. As a white, middle-income male am I even considered for admittance? I guess what I am wondering is, is the program free of charge because it is targeted at minorities or is it free because it is merit-based? I looked around the website and noticed that anybody can apply to the non-diversity (and non-free) program without submitting any letter of recs, transcripts, etc. which leads me to believe that my solid application will give me a chance at being accepted despite my fairly uninteresting ethnic background. Could somebody shed some light on whether programs such as this include whites/caucasians in their definition of "diverse"?

you should apply. the program wouldn't be very "diverse" if there were only minorities there. I don't believe that the website says anything about the program being primarily for URMS.

I'm applying, but I'm an URM.

sweet, thats what i was hoping to hear =). BTW for future reference what does URM stand for? under represented minority = my best guess at the acronym.

^yea, thats what urm stands for. im applying too, and im also a urm. it would be really cool to meet some fellow cc people if i get accepted.

The diversity programs are usually for minorities but if you consider yourself diverse because ur unlike anybody in ur town or whatever, u can apply. Just make sure that ur essay really sets u apart because I think they have preference for minorities and that's why its free (most can't afford 2,000+ programs) . I participated in SAMS at CMU and most of us had really diverse backgrounds.

^ how competitive would you say it was to get in? were the people there super smart or just relatively smart? welcome to cc by the way

hey hpa10, are you done you app. yet?

I'm still have to write my essays...darn procrastination!

i just found out about the program about 3 days ago, so i still gotta my essays goin too

I'm not really sure about the other programs but SAMS had about 630 applicants last year and around 100 got accepted. As in almost every other summer program, there were some really smart people and then some relatively smart. For SAMS u have to make a great essay because grades aren't as important.

avl258, how do you know how many applied and how many were accepted? Is there any place (website) where i can find this info.? Thanks by the way, I was worried at first b/c someone said that like 1000 people applied and only 80 were accepted.

I attented SAMS for the last two summers, they gave us all the stats when we arrived at orientation the first day.

By the way that's only for SAMS, not for all the diversity programs. I think they might be maybe over 1000 over all. Not really sure because the way it works is that SAMS is the only separate program. The other diversity programs take classes with the rest of the summer programs at CMU ( same dorms, I think same classes). SAMS have their own activities, we have a lot more work, and our dorms are usually really far away from the others.

i just learned about this program a few days ago too, so im not done with my essays yet. im going to get them done this weekend for sure though. is there anybody here that had already turned in their app.?

thank you, avl258.
