Which school should I choose to do Early Decision. Both of these schools are pretty high up on my list, but I'm not sure which one is right. I know that Cornell is an ivy league, but I heard the coursework is gigantic; plus, its in the middle of nowhere. Then again, I'm not sure if the coursework at Carnegie would be any better. I wanna major in engineering and possibly business. Which school would you recommend?

Both schools have fantastic, well-respected - and comparable - engineering programs. For an engineering education you can’t go wrong with either. Now if you want to enter a business-related field for your career, you may be better off at Cornell, which attracts a large number of firms hiring its graduates.

On the other hand, I understand CMU is a target school for many recruiters as well, especially for its computer science graduates.

I would go to Cornell just in case you find out that you don’t want to do engineering

I agree that engineering in general is comparable at the two schools. If you have decided on a branch of engineering, compare the course lists for both schools. Due to its size, Cornell has the wider and deeper range of options outside of engineering. For business, though, CMU has Tepper, which is a first choice for a lot of students. Both schools have a reputation for difficult classes. If you are someone who is at the very top of your HS class, you may be looking at an A average, but otherwise, you will have to be prepared to accept B’s and C’s. From what my niece has told me, CMU is very strict on grading.

It sounds as though you have not visited either school. Cornell can be a challenge to get back and forth from, especially at holidays, and a visit may not be possible before ED. CMU has EDII, with a December deadline which would allow a visit.
