Carnegie Mellon vs. Georgia Tech for MechE

hey you guys. i've been accepted to both cmu and gatech. but i have no idea where to go. I want to be at a school with a great reputation, great engineering, and a great job afterwards. what is a girl to do?

i've been to a precollege program at cmu for the past two summers, i know a lot of people there (faculty and students), and i absolutely love it there. where as with georgia tech i'm an instate student with great FA, been accepted to the honors program, summer program, but i don't know it well and the student's general consensus from the school is that they hate it.

i really don't want to regret my decision for the rest of my life.

COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME?!

Is the cost difference very large/would you end up with substantial debt? I’m a MechE at CMU, and it is a really great program with wonderful professors, research/internship opportunities, etc. It undoubtedly has everything you’re looking for - great reputation, great engineering, and will put you in a good place for job hunting.

However, while I don’t know much about GA Tech personally, it does have a great reputation for engineering, and I’m sure its grads do well in the job hunt as well. If CMU does not cost a lot more, then I would highly recommend it - smaller classes, accessible professors, etc. However, if there is a really large cost difference, I’m not sure incurring substantial debt for CMU is worth it. Great FA, an honors program, etc. sounds like a pretty good deal, so if CMU is really going to be a financial burden, I would suggest looking into GA Tech more.

Hope that helps a little!

thank you californiadancer

bump 10char

bumpity bump :)

Both are excellent schools. My d is at CMU and loves it. Her cousin is at Georgia Tech and loves it there too. Both are in Engineering, but not MechE. Both like their programs and feel they are challenging. Both are social type people and have found what they are looking for at each of those schools. Financial Aid may be something to consider based on your post. Also, it sounds like Georgia Tech is closer to home for you if that matters. If you love CMU though, its hard to turn down the wonderful opportunity you have to go there.

LuvBoston: that’s very true! and btw i love boston too!

i visited tech this weekend and it didn’t feel like the best fit but then again i was super sore from a tennis match the day before. i also got my FA from cmu and it is REALLY good. now the determining factor is job placement, internships, and co-op. if cmu gives me great job experience prior to graduating, then i’ll be going there

can yall tell me about those opportunities?

As for internships, CMU has many connections, you should find an internship as long as you keep your GPA up. (Their internship database has loads of internships for Mech E’s)

I agree CMU would be better for MechE.

i believe you harvard521, but could you tell me why? i swear i’m not trying to be difficult (:

Other than computer science tech is rated better in all engineering programs than cmu. Also you can change majors at tech not possible at cmu. Tech is a much better engineering college than cmu.

The only major you might have a hard time changing to at CMU if you’re starting off as an engineer is Computer Engineering. Transferring into any of the other colleges minus fine arts and architecture) is pretty easy.

do you go to cmu racinreaver? and if you do what do you major in, what other schools did you get into, and why cmu?

I graduated from CMU a few years ago, and my major choice after acceptances was between RPI and CMU. I chose CMU because I really liked the atmosphere of the school, the city of Pittsburgh, and the opportunities my department offered.
