Carnegie Mellon vs. Penn State

Hey everybody,

I got accepted into Carnegie Mellon's Humanities and Social Sciences School (rejected from Tepper, but my major is a joint program with the business school, which is pretty cool). Financial aid from CMU was more than I expected: $36000. So I'd be paying about $25000 per year. However, that's not guaranteed, since I'd have to reapply for financial aid each year.

I also got accepted into Penn State's main campus on a full ride Bunton-Waller Scholarship. I literally won't have to pay a cent if I decide to attend.

I think the only reason why I'd choose CMU (btw, I have spent my last two summers there as a part of their SAMS program--schwag) over Penn State is because of its "prestige" factor, and that the job opportunities will (I think) be much better.*First reason is lame, I know. :/

Also, I put down Finance as my major for Penn State, but if I go there, I will change it to Statistics with maybe a minor in Econ.*So I guess it comes down to CMU's Economics and Mathematical Sciences (H&SS and Tepper degree) for $100000+ vs Penn State's Statistics degree for free.

This may be a stupid question, but thanks for your help, regardless.

Whats the GPA requirement for the full ride ? If its too high, you won’t be able to keep it for more than 1 year.

First year: 2.75.
Then 3.0 for the rest.

Penn State is not going to prevent job opportunities, and the 100K debt will make you regret the decision later on in life. CMU has the prestige, yes, but 5 years after you’ve graduated nobody cares and it’s all about job experience. I’d go to Penn State.

I didn’t see him say it would be 100k in debt just that he would have to pay 25k a year.

What do you want to work in?
