UNC has posted the computer options for 2013. Any thoughts on the options? I am trying to decide between the T431 and the Thinkpad Twist. The T431 does not have any reviews yet since it just came out but the previous model (T430) had good reviews except for LCD which is fixed in the T431. The Twist has reviews which are mostly good except for battery life and glare due to the glossy IPS screen. I am wondering if the tradeoffs (less battery life, smaller screen) of the Twist is worth it for the tablet function.

The tablet is nice because of the SSD that comes with it. Boot up times are extremely quick and accessing data on the computer is increased mildly. Also the way windows 8 is designed, its meant for touch functions so the tablet is perfect for it. The t431s is nice though for the anti glare screen. If you intend to study outside on a beautiful carolina day, then this is a must. Also, the ability to add more ram to the t431s computer is always nice, giving it more memory to run programs and the like. The tablet is locked to 4gb.

A word of warning, desks are small at UNC so smaller laptops are normally easier to deal with than their larger counterparts. As for battery life, 6 hours is more than enough for class throughout the day.If you were to pull an all nighter at the library, you’re gonna have to bring the charger for either computer anyway.

IMO, i think you should go for the twist. I work at the its office in the library there so I’ve seen and messed with the older models of both series (T430,T420,T410/X220,X230[tablet versions]) and the tablet computers seemed like the more useful/fun version.

Thanks.

What has been your experience with battery life? I have seen many posts where users have been getting 3.5-4 hours max if the settings are set properly. Has that been your experience?

Thanks for the information. I wasn’t even considering the Twist at first but I’m probably going to go with it now. It looks like it also has HDMI? HDMI combined with a SSD cache drive is a HUGE plus for me.
