I'm getting a car for the first time to bring on campus, and I was wondering whether I could drive a 2-wheel drive car or should I be driving a 4-wheel drive one? What do most people drive? I'm a little worried about driving in the winter, especially with those big hills. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My older kid had a mini cooper (stick shift) for 4 years at Cornell. She didn’t drive when the weather was really bad. She said streets were plowed very well. She didn’t have any problem. She did park her car at an indoor garage junior and senior year, which made it less painful when there is a large snow fall.

Within a day of a storm, the roads should be near perfect to drive on no matter the car. Just watch out for ice.

I wouldn’t drive while it’s snowing no matter whether you have 2wd or 4wd, as 4wd doesn’t make you all that much better off. I did drive my 2wd vehicle in one snowstorm and the hills are definitely a problem, but I grew up around snow so I was okay controlling my vehicle (still shouldn’t have been out; it started snowing after I left), but the real problem was all the non-experienced winter drives sliding all over the place going up hills. As is common sense, when it’s snowing, slow down! Probably more than you think you have to.
