Carthage or SEMO

This is one last desperate attempt to get info on the MT programs at Carthage and Southeast Missouri State. We have narrowed our choices down to those 2. We have looked at the programs and our out of pocket costs and they are very close. What we don’t know is how good the faculty and training are at each. We would really just love to hear about experiences at both, either positive or negative.

I was curious as I am not familiar with either of these programs. From just looking at their websites, it appears to me that SEMO has probably the more accomplished alumni. The website shows several alums who are EMC or equity members, and many who are working in reputable places.

Carthage also shows some of their alums and what they are doing . carthage.edu/music-theatre/alumni/ Their alums are not necessarily as recent nor are there many performers.
Of course both schools are just showing a select few of their graduates and what they’re doing, but I assume they’d put the most notable accomplishments on their website.
You may want to compare the two and see which alums are getting the type of work you are hoping to get. Strictly from this very simple, non scientific analysis, SEMO would appear to be the stronger program of the two in my opinion.

I also am a big fan of comparing curriculum and seeing which has the classes you wish to take.

My daughter is about to graduate from SEMO and has had a positive experience there. She feels she has grown as an actor. Some faculty members are very strong.

With hindsight being 20/20, I would look for a program that requires Ballet 1 of all freshmen. I would also look for a program that doesn’t cast freshmen in main stage shows. Those 2 criteria indicate a program that is focused on training and skill.

Several of her friends who graduated last year and the year before are working actors. The program achieved Conservatory status a year or two ago and is up and coming.

Vvnstar’s advice to compare curriculum is spot-on.
