@lablover69 same here. High stats. Deferred EA for engineering. Did you apply for financial aid?
@kalons you can’t just assume those with high stats are using CW as a safety. My son did all this things to show interest. He went there and really liked it. Interviewed and more. So your “warning” didn’t apply to us and likely some others. I’m sure there are plenty of factors. The major. The amount of financial need. He was deferred EA also. People are allowed to voice their disappointment.
i feel like major could have made such a disproportionate difference compared to other schools, case is being very weird this year
I honestly did not indicate a lot interest and I was accepted.
@Rahrae Thank you. I have acceptances to Arizona State and Santa Clara. Was looking to possibly use it at one of those. Case Western was one of my top choices - that is why I chose to use it there.
Waitlisted
SAT: 1500
ACT :34
Rank: Salutorian
Lots of ECs and Internship at Ivy League Lab
Already accepted to USC with scholarship (3% acceptance rate) so figured Case was my safety. SHOW INTEREST!!! I didn’t show interest in Case, Tulane, and Swarthmore and was waitlisted by all three. Could this mean I’m “overqualified” and I have a decent chance of getting into an Ivy next week? Good luck to all and congrats to those who got in!!
Same here. Case Western is DD’s safe school and she got accepted. College application process is really unpredictable. Good luck to all of you!
I suspect yield has a lot to do with the pattern of acceptances. My son got accepted engineering $23K merit:
ACT:30 (although mid 30’s in science and math)
GPA: 3.85UW / 4.38W
AP Scholar
in-state
Not many EC’s: Robotics, book club, NHS, no leadership positions
EA deferred
1 visit, no interview, no LOCI
In-state
Not much financial need
Was his #2 school, 1st choice still waiting for decision.
@ambkeegan considering the people i am talking about have literally said, “case was supposed to be my safety!” yes, i am allowed to “assume”/say what i said. someone three comments above me even said, “[…] figured case was my safety.” i never mentioned anything about your situation/said you specifically are not allowed to voice your disappointment. i was addressing others’ comments. thanks.
I believe @kalons assessment was pretty spot on.
There is a post above about someone who was accepted to UCs and Northwestern, etc. and pissed that he was waitlisted at Case.
With acceptances like that – why be mad? or even waste your time posting here.
It has been like this for YEARS.
Yes you have a right to post your disappointment, but for most, Case was never their first, second, or third choice.
Case HAS been need aware.
The first indication of that was the switch from free app.
I feel for the students who really wanted to be students there.
But what leaves a bad taste in my mouth are the ones who post stats and say stuff like “good thing I didn’t invest my time in pursuing a spot. - I didn’t want to go there anyway.”
@nyohio my son is similar to your son as in engineering with similar ECs and has leadership positions ACT 35. We did apply for financial aid. I think that is the factor here. We can’t change that right now.
@kalons I saw the safety school that must have been posted right before yours just now.
S waitlisted.
ACT 34
GPA 3.76 uw
school does not rank
white, applied for need-based aid
My take-away from looking at all the kids who were also waitlisted or denied with stats equal to or better than my S’s is that Case admission is HEAVILY need-aware. Case wants to be considered top-tier, but I don’t think that it will get there until it goes “need-blind/full need,” like the schools of which it fancies itself to be a peer.
@oscillate “were you guys accepted for a major? my acceptance letter doesn’t mention one.”
Case has a “single door admissions policy” so you are not accepted for a particular major. But if you wanted something specific like nursing and you haven’t told them that yet, you should let them know. And if you want, say, engineering, you should start off with the engineering curriculum.
with our single-door admission policy, once you’re admitted, you can explore the university’s entire catalog of academic offerings across the schools of engineering, nursing and management as well as the College of Arts and Sciences.
I also assume there is some decisions made on proposed major…No college can have all Biomedical Engineers…they need students a variety of majors so there may be a variety of scores/GPAs that go with that.
@bopper, do you know if CWRU ranks their waitlist? How do they decide which candidates to approach? And there is no question they are need aware at this stage.
I do not know that. Not sure if it is ranked or if they need another English major or the like.
I do know based on what has happened over past years that they do:
- Want to protect their yield…they will basically ask “Would you enroll if accepted?”
- Offer merit scholarships to waitlisted students.
They offer housing to all students and don’t want to overenroll (that happened when I was a freshman…some had to stay in fraternities or a hotel)…so they accept a certain amount ,see who enrolls, and then fill in the rest with waitlisters.
Is this type of exchange @bopper that you mention in example #1 done over the phone with the student? What if they student says yes, and they mean it. Then, after consulting with parents and comparing all offers, they all decide it’s not feasible. How does the offer transpire? Via email? I’d imagine they’d want a quick committal.
Check out the following link on the example of the email that has been used in the past:
Thanks @ bopper. That link is helpful. Basically, it’s not a phone call, but rather an email. And it looks as if they email who they want to see if they will accept an offer. I am glad to know in some weird way, that this will now be up to Case, and it it doesn’t work out, then fine. I am sad, though. I will admit. My D did everything she could to show interest, reach out, and I know she is well prepared for her field. It’s truly a mystery, but I have a feeling her waitlisting has to do with our financial need and that she is a Bio major/pre med track. Thanks for your help.
I keep on seeing that the “reasoning” behind being waitlisted or denied is being blamed on financials.
Yet, I see the accepts are receiving offers of $23K +.
Just curious about how much aid, people expected to receive?
My daughter is Bolton Scholarship awardee $25K
Also received $10K in additional aid
