Case Western Visit

@yourmomma You know what they call a couple of cases of beer at Case Western? Nobody knows because they have never seen that much beer in one place at one time… :))

There is plenty of off campus drinking parties at Case. Apparently students fly to Las Vegas to party on occasion too, and go to all night RAVE type dancing in Cleveland. I get this from the nursing students I talk with. Its not all nerds at Case and many athletic students have good party lives there. But its more low key. There is a strong Greek life at Case, some is service oriented, but quite a bit is very social. Athletes date nursing students as well.

I think Swarthmore College is literally the place where fun comes to die, it is really their motto, not CRWU’s motto.

If I picked a motto for Case, it would be, “where students come to do research work, and still have a life around academics” . OK, that a a totally pathetic motto but Case is no where near the nerd levels that we see at many other US colleges, because of the business and nursing students, who just don’t fit the nerd mold.

Case Western’s students are pre-law, pre-med, accounting, nursing, engineering, as well as music and the humanities and social sciences, but certainly its not Miami U. level of parties.

I am going to Case tomorrow guys… Wish me luck!

UPDATE: Case was alright. I may be saying that because I GOT LOST IN THE HOOD! My worst nightmare. Overall, the campus visit was pretty nice, and I liked the vibe. It was very comfortable on the campus, because I am from Ohio, so I am used to Cleveland. My tour guide was a little weird though. She kept dodging questions and pushing us around. I am visiting Vanderbilt on March 24th, so I will see if there is any improvement. My mom fell on the crooked sidewalks and sprained her ankle. I will still be applying in senior year.

Visited Tuesday with my daughter. We did not feel unsafe anywhere on campus. The students we talked to did not feel unsafe. Also, as part of the freshman “survey/intro” class, they use their RTA (regional transit authority) pass to travel to several Cleveland neighborhoods, and then meet up at a baseball game. Students receive RTA passes free of charge for their 4 years at Case. As with any university close to a large city, there will be areas that you will want to avoid. We talked to the bartender at our hotel, and he said a student would have to really try hard to end up in a part of East Cleveland that they shouldn’t.

@jandhmom I have to disagree with that. It was sketchy pretty much everywhere you went outside of campus, except for past Cleveland Clinic. We got lost, and had to go through East Cleveland (extremely sketchy overall). The area right outside of Cleveland Clinic was not great either. University Circle was pretty nice though, but I’m not really a fan of Case Western as a whole after my visit.

@ab2002 were you driving? Once you are on campus you stay on campus unless you are venturing somewhere else.

@bopper We plugged the address they sent into the GPS, and it took us to a hospital in a East Cleveland for some reason. We got onto campus, and it was alright. I was not really that impressed at all. I think I belong in the South. Emory and Vanderbilt are still on my list for ED. I think it’s just my personal preference. We also got a tour guide who was very sarcastic and animated, and it kind of took away from the tour. She told us that we couldn’t go into any of the buildings, but then she realized that other tour groups were in the buildings.

@ab2002. You clearly dislike CWRU. Why in the heck would you even waste your time and your parent’s money applying? You obviously don’t feel comfortable in Cleveland and have no intention of having an open mind about it. If you are being honest with yourself, you know you will not attend if offered a spot. So do yourself a favor…find someplace you love, forget CWRU and thrive in a place where you truly want to be attending.

@labegg You’re right. Three of my family members went to Case, so I have tried being open about looking at it, but it’s not for me. I guess it will all work out in the end.
