Hey! I am scheduling a visit and I am just slightly concerned safety wise. Being from Ohio, I know East Cleveland is renowned as being very unsafe. I’ve heard car theft rate in the surrounding areas is relatively high and I just wanted to get some experiences to help reassure me or push me away from visiting. I come from an upper class white family so I am not used to going into the “ghetto.” Thank you for your insight.
Case Western and University Circle are not in the ghetto. And neither is in East Cleveland.
Well considering East Cleveland is considered the most dangerous area of Cleveland, in which University Circle is in the middle of… @TomSrOfBoston
The City of East Cleveland is to the east of University Circle. Look at a map.
You may be more comfortable attending a suburban college.
@TomSrOfBoston That’s not the issue, I’m asking for people with visiting experience to give me their input on the safety of the school.
We have been visiting our son at Case for the past four years. Some great options, all of which are safe. There is a Marriott Courtyard on Cornell Rd. It’s a great location, right adjacent to campus and close to Little Italy as well. Highly recommended and very safe.
@ProudDad26 Alright, thank you! I am actually driving, because I only live 2 hours away, so it will be a day trip. Also, are there other ways to show my interests other than an interview and a visit?
@ab2002 are you applying regular decision? Don’t know what your intentions are, but do you really want to go to Case? Why are you applying?
@ab2002 given that you have UPENN’s logo as your personal image, I suspect that you have other interests rather than Case.
@ProudDad26 I am a sophomore in high school. I’m interested because it’s in-state, the department for my major is small and gives me more opportunity and I overall like Cleveland. I feel like it could be a good opportunity, so that’s why I want to visit. I mean I am not definitely saying “CASE WESTERN 2020 AHHH!” I like other schools too, but I want to show them I am actually interested and not for the rank.
@ab2002 sounds like a good (early) plan. If you are visiting the school as a sophomore - that MORE than communicates your interest in the school. Keep in touch with the admissions office over the next two years and you should be in great shape. Good luck!
I think I’m qualified to help on this!
I’m a junior currently in the college admissions process. I am from Ohio as well (central). I toured Case last spring and loved it! I was apprehensive safety wise because I know Cleveland generally isn’t safe, but from the moment I stepped on to the campus I felt safe. Case has numerous blue lights around, is surrounded by multiple hospitals (seriously, you hear A LOT of sirens) and if I remember correctly we saw at least a couple police cars patrolling. My parents main concern about CWRU was safety and they even thought that the school took great care in providing safety. The school is very clean and although it is urban it has a very safe feel to it.
I will say that the closer you get to downtown Cleveland (I think this was the residential side, but don’t quote me on that) the more you will want to keep an eye out.
But, for the most part it felt really safe, and by the way struck me as a school who really cares about education, especially science and engineering wise. Will definitely be on my list!
Just curious- are there any schools you’re looking into in Ohio other than Case?
The drive to the campus can be a bit sketchy depending on which way your maps take you… but once on campus there is no issue of safety during my visits. Might not want to wander around alone at night, but that goes for pretty much all schools
I am from NE Ohio, my husband attended Case, we have friends that teach at Case. If you approach Case from the downtown side via Euclid/Chester/ etc, going past Cleveland State University, you indeed do go through some “sketchy” areas and any suburban kid is going to feel a bit uncomfortable at first, it is normal but in no way should deter you from attending. Case is as safe, if not safer than any other urban school. University Circle is fantastic and lively. Coventry (which used to be where most Case kids rented apartments/houses) has always had a very hipster vibe. Case is a typical urban campus, you will get used to an urban enviroment, you will be just as safe there as anywhere, if you are aware if your surroundings. You will quickly learn the boundaries of “safety”.
It is safer than Penn in my opinion. I used to live at 52nd and Walnut. I routinely heard gun shots and had my car broken in to multiple times. (My Mom cried the day she moved me into that apartment because she was convinced something awful would happen to me)
My daughter attends Marquette University in downtown Milwaukee. MU reminds me very much of Case. It is safe, you just have to be aware of your surroundings at all times and yeah an occassional crime is going to occur. Crimes happen in the suburbs too and crime happens on college campuses everywhere.
@labegg @tennistfl Thank you! That was exactly was I was looking for.
@astromae2001 I’m looking at Penn, Dartmouth, Emory, Boston University, NYU, Kenyon and CMU. My last resort is OSU or Kentucky (safeties) to be completely honest. I hated the vibes at both, even though my brother goes to OSU and my mom is an OSU grad.
Search for topics on safety here on CC in the CWRU forum, such as:

We visited last spring. Case is definitely in the city and not in a posh suburb like Northwestern, but when you walk around it feels quite safe. I don’t think you need to worry the way you are worrying.
I agree, I’m not big on the schools here in Ohio other than Case. I honestly feel like for most of them, kids go there to party lol. I’m striving for Cornell, and other than that I’m thinking CMU, University of Rochester, and Washington University (St. Louis… loved it when I toured)
Safety wise so far I’ve looked into Ohio University. But that’s it. Wish Ohio had some more good schools!
@astromae2001 I know! When I tell my teachers which schools I like, they like throw a huge fit and say “What? Is OU not good enough for you?” Mostly because a lot of them went to OU. Kenyon and Case are two schools I am actually interested in, but OSU again is last resort.
I’ve gotten that, too. It’s like it’s a bad thing to dream about going to a better school, lol. Really hoping it doesn’t come down to going to some of those schools!
