Cast iron cooking

So funny. I thought my husband had seasoned our new pan. Turns out he had tried grilled cheese and then re-seasoned it.

Grilled cheese was a staple for my youngest for a really long time. Must’ve made hundreds if not thousands in our cast iron pans. Some of those combos sound really good!

Thanks for the guidance

I do exactly this. Heat it up a little after I wash it with soap. Sometimes I’ll put a tiny bit of oil on a paper towel and swoosh it around the pan before it cools off. That’s it.

Please do! I love lamb

I use soap because otherwise they are nasty. Just dry totally. DH babies them. I am a brute. Just reseason occasionally.

This is the recipe (Lamb Peka). Directions here are for cooking in an oven, over charcoal, or an open fire. I’ve done it using a cast iron Dutch oven over charcoal and over an open fire. For the open fire, we used the fire pit that we have on our patio. This is a Croatian inspired dish, which Croatians make for special occasions. (I asked my cousin, who lives in Split, for a recipe and she said she hasn’t made it in years because it required too much work!) It’s not hard, you have to follow directions.

Thanks looks yummy!

We initially bought our set exactly to go camping. Then fell in love with it.

Thanks for the feedback and ideas! Today for lunch we made our first ever Dutch Baby. It was good, though next time we may try a bit of baking powder (like we saw in other recipes).

My husband was right when he speculated that “Dutch” is probably from intended Duetsch/German term as is the case with the “Pennsylvania Dutch” community originally from Germany. ‘

Not sure if this one was mentioned, but it’s a favorite here - with a nice salad.

Look what this thread made me cook for breakfast. (It’s actually a heavy aluminum pan.)

Sweet or savory?

Sweet. Always my preference.

We used your savory dutch baby recipe. It was really poofy, we think because he accidentally omitted the cheese (but it was still good)

We just made a savory Dutch baby for lunch. Bacon Ham Scallions. Delicious with a side salad. Def less poofy than the regular one - a breakfast favorite, with jam and berries!

Here is our most used cast iron recipe. I love that I can mix it in the weekend and have it ready to go for any day during the week.

LOL. There are a lot of great perfectly seasoned cast iron skillets that don’t cost 400 bucks! In fact my mom owned one and now I have it.

Ditto! My sister now owns the one grandpa used to make pancakes for us when we were little. He also had a Dutch oven. The Dutch oven’s handles fell off… grandpa repurposed it as a dog dish. The dogs could not move it around with their noses or paws… great dog dish, lol.
