We are looking into purchasing a new laptop for our soon to be freshman, preferably a Macbook. Does anyone have experience buying through Cav computers vs Apple? If the safeware protection plan comes with the Macbook, is there any need to buy Applecare in addition?
- Engineers and architects should check the recommendations online from their schools. The E school for instance recommends against Macs.
- Before you buy any software, check out the UVa website. UVa provides free or low cost software to students, including a full MS Office suite. I think UVa also still provides free antivirus.
- For windows users, they can buy a basic operating system, and then get a free or low cost OS upgrade from UVa.
We bought through Cav computers and did not purchase apple care. DD had a few problems with her laptop these past 4 years and Cav computers always came through-would definitely use it. I also recommend that you do things in google drive or some kind of cloud-in case you do have to take the laptop in you can still get to your work on the loaner.
We have three kids at or recently graduated from UVA. We bought all three a Macbook through Cavalier Computers. Great decision for all three! The laptops come ready to go plus being able to drop them off for a simple repair or the replacement of a hard drive ( after one fell off a bed on to a hard floor) has been so helpful. It has been so nice when there is a problem to know that Cavalier Computers will handle it.
